DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing review: Quick but not the boss (baby)

DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing invites players to join an animated race featuring a lineup of beloved DreamWorks characters, ranging from classics like Shrek to newer additions like characters from Trolls. While kart racing games have thrived, with the Mario Kart series leading the pack, DreamWorks Animation enters the genre with a diverse cast of characters racing on tracks inspired by their respective animated settings.

However, the game falls short in fully capitalizing on the rich DreamWorks universe. Despite a variety of franchises, each with its unique appeal, the game only features two characters at most from each, limiting the representation of favorites like Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon. Shrek emerges as a popular character, even though it’s been over a decade since his last film. Meanwhile, Trolls, one of DreamWorks’ more recent successes, plays a significant role in races, requiring players to collect musical notes for special abilities.

Developed by GameMill, the game excels in gameplay mechanics, offering a variety of modes such as Cups, Free Race, Challenge, and Time Trial. In-game customization allows players to modify their karts for speed, turbo, handling, charisma, and weight. The 20 race tracks impress with their diverse environments, capturing the essence of DreamWorks Animation worlds.

Despite its strengths, DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing falters in the audio department. Voice acting is a notable drawback, with characters often sounding off the mark. Repetitive lines during races become a nuisance, detracting from the overall experience. The in-game and menu music, despite the game’s focus on collecting musical notes, disappoints with its generic quality, lacking familiar tunes from the animated properties.

The multiplayer feature allows up to four players to race on the same console, promoting a social gaming experience. The game offers a variety of challenges and unlocks, enhancing replayability. However, a glitch that erases progress upon switching profiles poses a significant issue.

Despite its shortcomings, DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing manages to be a fun, family-friendly game with engaging gameplay and diverse tracks. While it may not match the standards set by Mario Kart, it provides an enjoyable experience, especially for younger players. The game’s blend of classic and newer DreamWorks characters adds charm, making it a decent addition to the kart racing genre.
