Aquaman 2 concludes the DCEU once more as it releases this month

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the much-anticipated sequel starring Jason Momoa and directed by James Wan, has unveiled its digital and Blu-ray release dates, offering fans an opportunity to enjoy the underwater adventure from the comfort of their homes. The film is scheduled for a digital release on January 23, followed by a DVD/Blu-ray/4K release on March 12. While the specific streaming date on Max is yet to be disclosed, industry observers expect it to align closely with the physical release window.

Despite its box office success of around $380 million worldwide, including $110 million domestically, the sequel faces unique challenges. Originally conceived as a highly anticipated sequel connecting characters from the Justice League, various factors led to multiple creative shifts during production. Notably, Ben Affleck’s Batman and Michael Keaton’s Batman were initially included but later excluded due to evolving circumstances. Additionally, the controversy surrounding Amber Heard further impacted the film’s development.

In the five-year gap between Aquaman movies, the dynamics within the DC universe underwent significant changes, contributing to the sequel’s transformation and divergence from established continuity. The film, unintentionally becoming the final installment of the Zack Snyder era, took on the mantle of concluding an entire franchise, marking a turning point for DC under new leadership at Warner Bros.

While the resulting film offers enjoyable moments and serves as a continuation of the characters and narrative from the original movie, there is a perceptible sense of a slightly disjointed narrative due to the numerous creative adjustments. Nevertheless, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom remains an exciting cinematic experience, particularly suitable for home viewing. ComicBook has broken the news of the release dates and provides a comprehensive list of special features for those interested in additional details about the home release.
