Goku achieves Super Saiyan 4 before Dragon Ball GT, as explained in Dragon Ball

Chapter 151 of Dragon Ball, created by mangaka Akira Toriyama, sheds light on the distinctive abilities of Goku and Vegeta when it comes to attaining the powerful form of Super Saiyan 4 in Dragon Ball GT. This revelation not only dispels the notion that only Goku can achieve this form due to his protagonist status but also demonstrates that the mystery behind Goku’s transformation was solved long before his initial ascension to the first Super Saiyan form.

In this pivotal chapter, Goku consumes the Super Water of the Gods, a potent substance that unlocks his true potential, while at Korin’s Tower. During this moment, the imagery of Goku’s face is juxtaposed with that of the fearsome Great Ape, symbolizing a significant connection. Following this occurrence, Korin remarks that he caught a glimpse of Goku’s true power. Notably, when Goku confronts the Demon King Piccolo in battle, he executes a punch that unmistakably bears the characteristics and immense power associated with the Great Ape.

Interestingly, it is essential to note that possessing a tail is not a prerequisite for transforming into Super Saiyan 4. In Dragon Ball GT, the transformation into Super Saiyan 4 is accomplished by first obtaining sufficient Blutz Waves from a celestial body, usually the moon, to trigger the Golden Great Ape form. The user must then maintain control while in this state, which subsequently leads to the transformation into Super Saiyan 4. However, Goku manages to bypass the requirement of becoming a Golden Great Ape altogether after being aided by Pan, who reminds him of a memorable beach experience. Since that event, Goku can directly ascend to Super Saiyan 4 without assuming the Golden Great Ape form.

In contrast, Vegeta’s path to achieving Super Saiyan 4 differs from Goku’s. Vegeta relies on being exposed to Blutz Waves each time he wishes to transform. Some fans speculate that this dependency stems from Vegeta lacking a tail, but this reasoning contradicts the fact that he can transform into a Golden Great Ape without one. The crucial factor for Vegeta is the presence of Blutz Waves. In episode 55 of Dragon Ball GT, Bulma theorizes that initially, Baby Vegeta’s transformation into Super Saiyan 4 was impeded by his insufficient physical strength rather than the absence of a tail. The tail primarily facilitates the absorption of Blutz Waves, making it more convenient but not an absolute requirement. Vegeta’s subsequent attainment of Super Saiyan 4 serves as evidence supporting this interpretation. Thus, what truly matters for a Saiyan is having an ample supply of Blutz Waves and the physical capability to withstand the transformation.

Addressing the question of how Goku can transform into Super Saiyan 4 without the presence of a celestial body emitting sufficient Blutz Waves, the most logical explanation lies in the Super Water of the Gods, a substance consumed by Goku during Dragon Ball. This elixir endows Goku with the power of the Great Ape, even without the need for absorbing Blutz Waves. The initial experience of becoming a Golden Great Ape, maintaining control, and subsequently transforming into Super Saiyan 4 establishes the foundation for Goku’s ability to access this form. In essence, Super Saiyan 4 functions for Goku similarly to how other Super Saiyan transformations operate for Saiyans in general. Just as no other Saiyan requires extreme rage or hatred to achieve Super Saiyan, Goku’s transformation into Super Saiyan 4 does not necessitate these emotions. Vegeta, however, does not undergo such a transformation with Super Saiyan 4, not because he lacks a tail, whose primary purpose is to absorb Blutz Waves, but because he never consumed the Super Water of the Gods.

While Dragon Ball GT often receives criticism for its alterations to the series’ continuity, it is worth noting that the roots of Super Saiyan 4 can be traced back to the original Dragon Ball, emphasizing the interconnectedness of the Dragon Ball franchise and the ongoing evolution of its transformative power.
