Dragon Ball Super solidifies the timeline placement of the Broly movie

In the latest chapter of the Dragon Ball Super manga, the long-standing debate regarding the timeline placement of the Dragon Ball Super: Broly movie has been finally put to rest. Chapter 93 of the manga takes a brief detour from adapting the events of the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero film to delve into Broly’s backstory, providing a definitive position for the Broly movie within the series timeline.

When the Dragon Ball Super: Broly film was released in December 2018 in Japan (and 2019 in the US), it garnered immense popularity and was hailed as the canonical continuation of the Dragon Ball Super TV anime series. However, the manga had already moved on to a new arc, the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga, causing confusion among fans regarding the chronological sequence of events following the Tournament of Power, the last arc of the TV series.

Chapter 93 of the manga begins by showcasing scenes from Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero featuring Broly before delving into an explanation of his background. On page 3 of the chapter, a narration box explicitly states that “just after the Tournament of Power, Goku and Vegeta found themselves battling Broly,” thus definitively placing the events of the Broly movie immediately after the Tournament of Power in both the manga and the anime. This revelation implies that the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga occurs after the Broly movie in the manga, resolving any previous ambiguity.

While the flashback in the manga condenses the entire Broly film into a mere five pages, it effectively establishes the movie as canon in both the manga and the anime. Previously, the manga only briefly touched upon the events of the movie, leaving fans perplexed about their integration into the Dragon Ball Super manga. With this clarification, the possibility of a Dragon Ball Super revival that adapts the remaining manga arcs, such as the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga, becomes more feasible. Additionally, it provides insight into the timeline gap between Broly and the Super Hero film, as the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga begins in chapter 43, indicating that the Broly movie predates it. Notably, Super Hero-related content commenced in chapter 88 of the manga, suggesting that the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga and the Granolah the Survivor Saga occurred during the interim period.

Fans of Dragon Ball Super can now rejoice, as this revelation puts an end to the ongoing debate and provides a definitive answer to the placement of the Broly movie within the series timeline.
