Dragon Ball Super’s manga canonized Broly earlier than fans recall

Fans are celebrating Broly’s canon debut in the Dragon Ball Super manga’s Super Hero arc, but in reality, he appeared five years earlier.

Broly, despite debuting in 1993 and quickly becoming a popular villain, never appeared in the original manga created by Akira Toriyama. However, Broly’s journey from the big screen to the manga page started prior to the Super Hero arc.

Broly was originally created by Takao Koyama and gained fame through the film “Broly the Legendary Super Saiyan.” Despite speculation about incorporating him into the main story, it wasn’t until 2018’s “Dragon Ball Super: Broly” that Toriyama himself took on the character, providing a fresh interpretation.

While the “Dragon Ball Super: Broly” film didn’t receive a full arc adaptation in the manga, snippets of Broly were shown in previous chapters. Chapter 42 briefly depicted Broly’s fight with Goku and Vegeta, and Volume 9 included a page featuring Gogeta and Broly. Volume 11 expanded on this with additional pages showcasing key moments from the battle.

Chapter 93 of the manga provides a more detailed flashback of the film during Broly’s character introduction. However, it’s worth noting that Toyotarou, the manga’s author, had been incorporating Broly in various ways long before the Super Hero arc, making him part of the manga canon for almost five years.

Overall, while the Super Hero arc marks Broly’s prominent inclusion in the present storyline of the Dragon Ball Super manga, he has already made appearances and had his moments within the manga’s pages prior to this.
