Florida School Bans Assassination Classroom Manga

Three books from Yusei Matsui’s popular comedy manga series, Assassination Classroom, have recently been removed from the library of a school in Florida. This action came after pressure from a conservative advocacy group known as Moms for Liberty, specifically the Indian River County chapter. Jennifer Pippin, the chair of the local chapter, voiced concerns about the presence of these books in the library due to the portrayal of students wielding firearms. In a statement to USA Today, Pippin emphasized their stance, stating, “We don’t want students to think it’s OK to kill their teachers.”

Assassination Classroom revolves around a group of middle school students who are being taught by an extraterrestrial being and are tasked with assassinating him within a year to save the Earth. The series has garnered significant popularity and has inspired two animated films, a live-action adaptation, a mobile game, and two 3DS games. In North America, the manga is published by Viz Media, while the anime adaptation can be streamed on platforms such as Crunchyroll and Hulu. Additionally, it has been featured on Cartoon Network’s Toonami.

It is worth noting that Pippin also raised concerns about a graphic novel adaptation of Anne Frank’s diary, titled Anne Frank’s Diary: The Graphic Adaptation. This adaptation, created by Ari Folman and illustrated by David Polonsky, faced criticism for its alleged “sexually explicit” illustrations and accused of “minimalizing the Holocaust.” Consequently, the graphic novel was also removed from the library of the nearby Vero Beach High School. However, other books related to Anne Frank, including her original diary, remain accessible to students within the school.

Despite the removal of the Assassination Classroom manga from the Florida school’s library, the series remains widely available to readers and fans. In North America, the manga continues to be published by Viz Media, allowing fans to enjoy it. Furthermore, the anime adaptation can still be streamed on popular platforms like Hulu and Crunchyroll, ensuring that enthusiasts can access the story in various formats.
