Dragon Ball creator discusses female characters

In the vast universe of Dragon Ball, where fighters abound, Goku reigns supreme as the central protagonist. While the series boasts a formidable roster of male characters like Gohan, Vegeta, and Piccolo, it is important to recognize that Dragon Ball also features a diverse cast of female characters. Bulma, who played a pivotal role in kickstarting the manga, stands as the initial female lead. However, the creator of Dragon Ball, Akira Toriyama, has openly admitted to encountering difficulties when crafting the series’ female characters.

This revelation surfaced in Dragon Ball Forever, a comprehensive guide to the series released in Japan several years ago. The publication includes an interview with Toriyama, the visionary behind Dragon Ball. In the interview, Toriyama delves into the intricacies of the manga’s story and responds to a query about whether he based the characters on anyone specific. With candid honesty, Toriyama discloses a truth about his creative process.

“When I draw women, they always end up having rough personalities,” confesses the creator (via Kanzenshuu). “I just can’t draw them as bubbly and upbeat. I can’t portray them as docile and cute either. I must admit I had some reservations about Chi-Chi’s personality. Perhaps it was because Goku was unemployed… I figured they’d have to rely on the Ox Demon King’s wealth to make ends meet. That’s why Chi-Chi ended up being such a nag.”

Hence, Toriyama’s artistic style steers away from creating bubbly female characters, a preference that persists to this day. A prime example can be found in characters like Kale and Caulifla, two female Saiyans whose personalities lean towards the serious and intense. Toriyama’s observation about Chi-Chi holds true, and the trend extends across various female characters in the series.

In contrast, when it comes to the male characters of Dragon Ball, Toriyama consciously designs heroes such as Future Trunks with his audience, particularly female fans, in mind. “In the case of men… perhaps with Trunks, there were parts I drew with female fans in mind. Even his silhouette; I mean, he’s got a sword on his back,” Toriyama shares. “Even someone like Piccolo is popular with women, it seems.”

Over the years, Dragon Ball has undergone transformative developments in its characters and their creation. Recently, fans of the series were captivated by the introduction of Moro in the Dragon Ball Super manga. However, certain aspects remain constant. Characters like Goku and Bulma, despite the challenges faced during their creation, continue to resonate with the fandom. Their enduring appeal is a testament to the lasting impact of Dragon Ball.
