Saitama in One-Punch Man will require significant plot armor to stay unnoticed

In the world of One-Punch Man, one of the longest-running and most effective gags revolves around Saitama’s ability to remain an anonymous hero. Despite his unmatched power and countless heroic feats, he is consistently overlooked and receives no recognition for his incredible achievements. Only a select few individuals are privy to the truth of Saitama’s unparalleled strength, and they have no intention of spreading that knowledge far and wide. However, it appears that this status quo may soon be upended, as recent developments suggest that Saitama will need some serious plot armor if he wishes to continue operating in obscurity.

It’s not that Saitama actively goes to great lengths to remain incognito; rather, he simply doesn’t care about being acknowledged. For the longest time, he believed that being a hero wouldn’t bring him any financial rewards or societal acclaim. Instead, it is the S-Class hero known as King who reaps the benefits of Saitama’s heroic endeavors, thanks to his reputation as an unbeatable force. King’s extraordinary luck always places him in the right place at the right time, inadvertently taking credit for Saitama’s triumphs. However, as Saitama’s influence and prominence continue to grow, it seems inevitable that King’s charade may also need to evolve.

One of Saitama’s greatest adversaries in his quest for anonymity is the rapid advancement of modern technology. Upon moving into the Hero Association’s new headquarters, he finds that his ability to move undetected has been severely compromised. His seemingly innocuous attempt to sneak his pet, Pochi, into the base triggers Dr. Bofoi’s sophisticated defense system, setting off alarms and activating surveillance cameras. Although the defense mechanisms prove to be no match for the bald hero’s unparalleled strength, Saitama unwittingly becomes the subject of recorded footage. Dr. Bofoi subsequently reviews the surveillance material and learns the truth about Saitama’s identity and his extraordinary capabilities. Furthermore, during a clash with the formidable Tornado, another S-Class hero, Saitama’s true fighting prowess becomes apparent.

The plan devised by Tornado and her sister Blizzard was initially intended to swiftly rescue the captive Psykos from the clutches of the Hero Association. However, the encounter between Saitama and Tornado quickly escalates into a chaotic and destructive battle, resulting in extensive property damage. Although Blizzard manages to strike a deal with the influential businessman McCoy to cover up the incident, it proves insufficient to keep prying eyes at bay. Child Emperor, a genius hero known for his technological prowess, manages to hack into the Hero Association’s systems, unearthing the concealed information and potentially discovering Saitama’s true abilities in the process.

As the story unfolds, an increasing number of characters within the One-Punch Man universe are becoming aware of Saitama’s existence and unparalleled power. While this knowledge might seem advantageous, especially among the S-Class heroes, it isn’t necessarily a positive development. Not all S-Class heroes can be deemed truly heroic, as evidenced by the morally ambiguous Metal Knight. With Dr. Bofoi now armed with knowledge of Saitama’s identity and capabilities, it seems only a matter of time before this cunning and potentially nefarious genius makes his move, potentially leveraging his alliance with the Hero Association to his advantage. Considering the subpar security measures in place to safeguard the Hero Association’s servers, it wouldn’t be surprising if other villainous entities have also managed to hack into the system, especially given the technological prowess of characters like Blizzard’s underling.

Additionally, there is the enigmatic Child Emperor to consider. As an S-Class hero, he is not known for being particularly talkative, suggesting that he may keep the information about Saitama to himself. However, given the public nature of Saitama’s clash with Tornado, numerous peripheral characters witness the battle, including the family they save and even Saitama’s new neighbors. At this point, it becomes increasingly challenging for Saitama to maintain a low profile. The only recourse for him to continue operating in obscurity would seemingly require the One-Punch Man story to introduce an extraordinary degree of plot armor—a narrative device that shields him from the consequences of his public exposure.

Thus, the time-honored gag of Saitama’s anonymity appears to be on the precipice of transformation. The delicate balance between his incredible power and his unrecognized status teeters on the edge, as more and more individuals become aware of his existence and abilities. Saitama’s journey to remain unnoticed faces a significant challenge, and the story must navigate this new territory while possibly employing elaborate plot devices to preserve his secret identity.
