Toonami is set to premiere multiple new shows, starting with the second season of Assassination Classroom

Toonami has exciting news as it plans to introduce a new show every week for the next month, starting with the highly anticipated second season of Assassination Classroom.

This announcement was made via Toonami’s official Facebook page, where they revealed their intention to premiere a new show each week. The post acknowledged the delay in sharing this information, citing the need to finalize deals before making any announcements. While the other shows joining the lineup remain a mystery for now, Toonami has officially confirmed the addition of Assassination Classroom Season 2 to its late-night weekend schedule, with the premiere episode scheduled for January 9.

Assassination Classroom is a sci-fi comedy series that revolves around a group of junior high school students assigned by the Japanese government to assassinate their extraterrestrial teacher. However, their teacher, named Koro-sensei, is no ordinary being. With incredible powers, including super speed and regeneration, Koro-sensei has already destroyed most of the moon and now threatens Earth. Surprisingly, Koro-sensei proves to be an exceptional teacher, not only evading the students’ constant assassination attempts but also helping them improve academically and teaching valuable life lessons.

The manga for Assassination Classroom, created by Yusei Matsui, debuted in 2012. The Toonami anime adaptation is the second animated version of Matsui’s unique comedy. The first was a standalone original video animation (OVA) produced by Brain’s Base. The more widely recognized adaptation is the TV series by Lerche, known for their work on Danganronpa and Rumble Garanndoll. The second season of the anime, which recently premiered on Toonami, originally aired in Japan in 2016. Both the manga and Lerche’s anime have garnered critical acclaim.

Toonami has a long history of promoting and popularizing anime in the United States. It originally premiered on Cartoon Network in 1997 and played a significant role in introducing series like Robotech, Sailor Moon, and Dragon Ball Z to mainstream audiences. The block was relaunched in 2012 as part of the late-night Adult Swim lineup. Its current roster includes beloved classics like Naruto: Shippuden and Cowboy Bebop, alongside modern hits like Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon and SSSS.Gridman. Toonami also showcases original shows produced in collaboration with Crunchyroll, such as Fena: Pirate Princess, Blade Runner: Black Lotus, and the upcoming adaptation of the Sega video game, Shenmue.
