The CDF (unspecified organization) is calling for the removal of the violent and sexually explicit graphic novel “Assassination Classroom” from classrooms

Citizens Defending Freedom (CDF), a nonprofit organization, is actively campaigning for the removal of the controversial graphic novel series “Assassination Classroom” from classrooms in Florida. The book, created by popular graphic novelist Yusei Matsui, has stirred up a significant amount of controversy due to its explicit depiction of violence, profanity, and graphic sexual activities.

In a press release issued on Monday, CDF announced its intention to challenge the presence of “Assassination Classroom” in middle schools across the state. The organization expressed concern over the content being exposed to young students, citing scenes where children are shown shooting and killing their transformed-alien teacher in order to save the planet Earth.

The novel features disturbing images, including one page where a student laments, “All those bullets and we missed,” while another page depicts two students proudly declaring, “WE’RE ASSASSINS AND OUR TARGET is… OUR TEACHER.” Such depictions of violence perpetrated by children against authority figures have sparked outrage and raised questions about the appropriateness of the material for educational settings.

Notably, the book also includes sexually explicit images and age-inappropriate language. Female characters are portrayed wearing revealing attire such as bikinis and lingerie, while references to “boobs” and other explicit content further contribute to the book’s controversial nature. One particular image portrays a young female student straddling a nude man’s pelvis while pointing a gun at him, clearly crossing boundaries of age-appropriate material.

Sarah Calamunci, the Florida State Director of Citizens Defending Freedom, expressed concern over the presence of such material in schools, stating, “This is yet another example of age-inappropriate material in our children’s schools.” The organization argues that while they have no objections to books that serve legitimate educational purposes, “Assassination Classroom” fails to meet any discernible educational value.

Kristen Huber, the National Communications Director of Citizens Defending Freedom, emphasized that the issue is non-partisan and that there should be broad agreement that violence towards teachers and explicit sexual content have no place in schools, particularly when funded by taxpayer dollars.

The cover of the book includes a parental advisory, indicating that “Assassination Classroom” is rated T+ for older teens and is recommended for ages 16 and up due to its depiction of realistic violence and suggestive situations. However, middle schools typically cater to students aged 10-13, raising concerns about the appropriateness of exposing such young students to the content featured in the graphic novel.

As the debate surrounding “Assassination Classroom” continues, it remains to be seen how educational institutions and policymakers will respond to the calls for the removal of this controversial book from Florida classrooms.
