Assassination Classroom Manga Faces Bans and Challenges Across States

“Manga Bans and Censorship on the Rise: Assassination Classroom Targeted in America”

The issue of book banning has gained significant traction in the United States, with manga being among the titles facing removal from shelves. The popular series Assassination Classroom has recently become a focal point for censorship efforts.

In Florida’s Gifford Middle School library, three volumes of the Assassination Classroom manga have been pulled, denying students access to the series. Jennifer Pippin, chair of the Indian River County chapter of Moms for Liberty, expressed concerns about the portrayal of students wielding firearms, stating, “We don’t want students to think it’s OK to kill their teachers.” Citing instances of school shootings in the country, Pippin deemed the manga inappropriate.

Assassination Classroom features an alien posing as a teacher who threatens to destroy the world, prompting the students to assassinate their teacher or face annihilation. It is a fictional premise clearly divorced from reality. Pippin was also involved in the removal of a book about Anne Frank, the renowned diarist who perished in the Holocaust.

While the manga remains available in other libraries across Florida, the Citizens Defending Freedom organization has declared its intention to advocate for a ban on those copies as well.

Kristen Huber, the National Communications Director of the organization, emphasized, “We should all agree that violence towards teachers and explicit sexual content should not be glorified or promoted in schools, especially using taxpayer funds.”

However, the challenges faced by Assassination Classroom extend beyond Florida. The Elmbrook School District in Wisconsin previously included the series in its electronic library, but it was removed last month following parental objections. Kay Koepsel-Benning, the Director of Library Services, attempted to defend the book but her arguments were ultimately disregarded.

Similar attempts to ban the manga are being made in Pender County, North Carolina, where critics assert that it serves as an educational guide on how to harm teachers.

In Virginia, Delegate Tim Anderson is backing a bill that mandates school principals to inform parents about books in the school containing explicit sexual imagery. Anderson cited Assassination Classroom as an example necessitating the implementation of such a law.
