Assassination Classroom banned in schools in Florida and Wisconsin

Assassination Classroom, the popular sci-fi comedy manga by Yusei Matsui, has recently faced bans in schools located in Florida and Wisconsin. The decision to ban the manga comes from concerns raised by parents and advocacy groups, who argue that it promotes the idea of students killing their teachers.

In March, Gifford Middle School in Florida removed three volumes of Assassination Classroom from its library, citing inappropriate content. Similarly, the Elmbrook School District in Southeastern Wisconsin took action by removing the series from its electronic library. The bans were prompted by fears surrounding school shootings and the perceived connection between the manga’s depiction of violence and real-life incidents.

At Gifford Middle School, the specific objection was raised against images of students brandishing guns that appeared in the banned volumes. Jennifer Pippin, chair of the Indian River County chapter of Moms for Liberty, expressed concerns about the normalization of violence and the potential impact it could have on students’ perception of killing their teachers. Another organization called Citizens Defending Freedom also condemned the manga for its explicit sexual content and alleged promotion of gun violence against teachers.

Wisconsin’s Elmbrook School District encountered similar objections, with a parent expressing discomfort about the manga’s explicit depiction of gun violence. Additional concerns were raised about the sexualization of minors in the series. In North Carolina’s Pender County, the manga is also being contested in libraries due to fears that it provides instructional content on how to harm teachers.

The bans have sparked further discussions about the presence of explicit content and violence in school libraries. Virginia Delegate Tim Anderson even referenced Assassination Classroom while advocating for House Bill 1379, which aims to require school principals to track works containing sexually explicit material and provide that information to parents. He highlighted the manga’s availability in some school libraries as a reason for the bill’s necessity. The bill has already passed the House of Delegates in Virginia.

Assassination Classroom, originally published in July 2012, revolves around a group of students who are tasked with assassinating their superpowered alien teacher within a year to save the Earth. The manga’s unique premise and blend of comedy and action attracted a wide readership. It was later adapted into an anime series by Studio Lerche, which premiered in January 2015 and further expanded its popularity.
