Dragon Ball Super treated an iconic moment like an afterthought

Throughout the long history of Dragon Ball franchise, the rivalry between Goku and Vegeta has been one of the most iconic and beloved themes. Vegeta has always been the perfect rival to Goku, even when he was a villain, their fights were all about proving their own strength rather than good vs. evil. Vegeta’s desire to surpass Goku became a recurring plot point in the franchise, leading to some incredible character development for Vegeta in particular. However, after years of waiting, it seems that Vegeta finally achieves his goal of beating Goku, but unfortunately, his glorious moment is given almost zero attention and happens in a story where both he and Goku barely play any role.

The latest Dragon Ball Super movie, Super Hero, focuses mainly on Gohan and Piccolo, with Broly being trained by Beerus, Whis, Goku, and Vegeta as a mere fraction of the film. Due to the focus shifting away from Goku and Vegeta, the weight of their scenes was severely minimized. Although they sparred against each other without transformations, the fight was still challenging and seemed to show that they were both worthy rivals of one another. However, it was only during a post-credits scene that the outcome of the match was revealed, with Vegeta beating Goku for the first time since the “Saiyan Saga.”

This moment is a huge deal, but it seems to lack significance due to the lack of transformations, which have become a staple of Dragon Ball. The fact that this moment was relegated to a post-credits scene also makes it feel like it was treated as an afterthought. While the film wasn’t about Goku or Vegeta, the scene deserved more attention given its importance to the characters and the franchise as a whole.

Overall, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero may not have given Goku and Vegeta the spotlight they deserved, but given that every storyline in Super has, it’s understandable. Nevertheless, fans are eagerly waiting for the day when the two Saiyans will have a true fight between them, and hopefully, future storylines in Super will provide that opportunity.
