Explaining the five special war powers of the Soul Society in Bleach

Yhwach, the Quincy King, designated five individuals as Bleach’s Special War Powers capable of turning the tide of the Thousand-Year Blood War. These five powerful individuals are Ichigo Kurosaki, Kenpachi Zaraki, Ichibē Hyōsube, Sōsuke Aizen, and Kisuke Urahara. Yhwach exercised caution against them, and they indeed lived up to their estimated war potential.

Ichigo Kurosaki’s growth rate and potential earned him his Special War Power designation. He has latent abilities and absurd growth rates, as demonstrated by his ability to achieve Bankai in just two-and-a-half days. He also has remarkable combat sense and the ability to deduce enemy attack patterns and think up strategies on the fly. He plays a pivotal role in the war by saving Kenpachi Zaraki from a group of Sternritter ambushing him, defeating Yhwach, and deducing and capitalizing on Aizen’s plan to deceive Yhwach using Kyōka Suigetsu. Ichigo evolves once again after Uryū Ishida shoots Yhwach with the Silver Arrowhead, as his Zangetsu reveals a second blade that allows him to deal the decisive blow that saves the world.

Kenpachi Zaraki’s immense combat strength earned him his Special War Power designation. As the 11th Kenpachi, a title reserved for the strongest Shinigami in the Gotei 13, he has defeated the 10th Kenpachi and the 1st Kenpachi Yachiru Unohana as a child. He can adapt his attack patterns easily, withstand his opponents’ attacks while maintaining his offensive poise, and attack in situations where others opt to defend. Zaraki contributes heavily to the war effort by assisting in keeping Schutzstaffel member Gerard Valkyrie at bay after activating his Bankai and overpowering him before unfortunately succumbing to the strain of his newly untapped power. He also defeats the Sternritter Gremmy, whose power is literally imagination.

Ichibē Hyōsube’s immense wisdom earned him his Special War Power designation. As the grandfather of Soul Society, he has the entire history and secrets of Soul Society within him, granting him immense insight that allows him to strategize and act from perhaps the most informed position of any combatant. However, his eternal tenure as Soul Society’s protector means that he witnessed the original defeat of the Quincy 1,000 years ago, a result that leads him to overconfidence in history repeating itself. Ichibē does not account for Yhwach’s ability to evolve and suffers a crushing loss at the hands of the Almighty.

Sōsuke Aizen’s immense spiritual pressure earned him his Special War Power designation. He negated Soi Fon’s Nigeki Kessatsu by overpowering her Reiatsu with his own. He fused with the Hogyoku, which requires a Reiatsu at least double that of a captain level Shinigami, stating that he possesses more than this amount in just his base form. After fusing with the Hogyoku, Aizen’s spiritual pressure increased to unprecedented levels.

Kisuke Urahara was not designated a Special War Power by Yhwach but played a significant role in the war. He was responsible for creating the Asauchi, which served as the blank Zanpakutō for all Shinigami. He also created the Hogyoku, which Aizen later fused with. Urahara’s intelligence and knowledge of technology were essential to the war effort. He also helped Ichigo achieve his Bankai and aided in defeating Yhwach.
