How ‘Wish’ Honors Vintage Disney Movies

In commemoration of the release of Disney’s ‘Wish,’ an opulent celebration of the company’s 100 years since its founding in 1923, Walt Disney Animation Studios generously opened the doors to its iconic Burbank headquarters, providing an exclusive and intimate look into the creative process behind the magical creation. As part of this immersive experience, select groups were privileged to participate in a private drawing class led by Griselda Sastrawinata-Lemay, the accomplished production and costume designer for ‘Wish.’ Attendees were guided through the art of drawing one of the film’s central characters, Star.

During the drawing class, Sastrawinata-Lemay intricately detailed how the illustrious history of Disney Animation served as the guiding force behind the meticulous designs of each character and the enchanting settings depicted in ‘Wish.’ Offering insights into the character of Star, she revealed that the choice of a heart-shaped facial structure was an intentional homage to the iconic Mickey Mouse, accentuating Star’s silent demeanor and the magical aura evocative of Tinker Bell.

The enchanting nods to classic Disney tales extend far beyond Star’s character. Notably, the film artfully pays homage to the timeless tale of Snow White’s seven dwarfs, with Asha’s friends embodying modern counterparts reminiscent of these endearing characters. Safi assumes the role of Sneezy, Simon as Sleepy, Dario as Dopey, and Gabo as Grumpy, each contributing a touch of whimsy inspired by Disney’s animated legacy.

The thematic richness of ‘Wish’ is further underscored by Asha, the film’s central character, who draws inspiration from Walt Disney’s original vision for princesses. Sastrawinata-Lemay elucidates that Asha appears in contemporary attire, complemented by supporting characters reflecting the distinctive styles of their respective time periods.
