“Disney’s Vast Animation Legacy and the Delayed ‘Princess and the Frog’ Sequel”
For a century, The Walt Disney Company has led the animation industry, from its modest beginnings with Mickey Mouse in “Steamboat Willie” (1928) to iconic classics like “Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs” (1937). Disney’s animation legacy continues today with industry-leading animation and ownership of Pixar Animation Studios (known for hits like “Toy Story” and “Finding Nemo”) and beloved theme parks such as Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort. The Disney brand has evolved, encompassing classics like “Cinderella” (1950), “Beauty and the Beast” (1991), and modern hits like “Zootopia” (2016). Disney’s reach extends to Lucasfilm’s “Star Wars” and Marvel Studios’ Marvel Cinematic Universe, shaping the media landscape.
Now, “The Princess and the Frog” (2009) takes center stage as it undergoes a transformation into the reimagined Splash Mountain ride at Disney Parks. However, this revamped attraction is set to debut before the release of the anticipated sequel.
The original “The Princess and the Frog” marked Disney’s final 2D animated feature, directed by John Musker and Ron Clements. It followed Tiana, voiced by Anika Noni Rose, as a waitress with dreams of owning her restaurant, along with Prince Naveen, who is transformed into a frog. The film featured a memorable cast, including Keith David as Dr. Facilier and Oprah Winfrey as Tiana’s mother, Eudora.
The sequel, tentatively titled “Tiana,” explores Princess Tiana’s journey as the Princess of Maldonia. While she embarks on new adventures as a newly crowned princess, her New Orleans roots remain close to her heart. Stella Meghie is set to direct and write this long-form musical series, originally scheduled for a 2023 release on Disney+.
However, the sequel has faced delays, with its release pushed from 2023 to 2024. Now, Disney has removed any specific release year, stating only “Coming soon to Disney+.” This unexpected shift could be attributed to changes in Disney’s content strategy, possibly following the leadership transition from former CEO Bob Chapek. Disney+ may have reached a content saturation point, leading to a slowdown in releases. Alternatively, Disney may find that certain sequel stories are better suited for long-form television on Disney+, rather than traditional theatrical releases.
In any case, this aligns with Disney’s approach to revisit 2000s theatrical animated films through television series, as seen with “Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure.” This approach could expand Disney+’s library of original programming while providing more extensive storytelling opportunities for beloved franchises.
Ultimately, while we can only speculate about the reasons for the delay, “Tiana” remains an eagerly anticipated addition to Disney’s storytelling legacy, offering fans a deeper exploration of Princess Tiana’s world and adventures.
