Negative Reviews for Princess Tiana Ride’s Themes

“Splash Mountain Transformation Faces Criticism for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure Theme”

Earlier this year, Splash Mountain attractions at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort closed to pave the way for the upcoming Tiana’s Bayou Adventure ride, set to open in 2024. However, the transformation does not involve tearing down Splash Mountain but rather retheming it from its current controversial theme based on “Song of the South” (1946) to the more inclusive “Princess and the Frog” (2009).

Construction for the Princess Tiana ride is already underway in Critter Country at Disneyland Park and Frontierland at Magic Kingdom Park, with brown walls surrounding the closed Splash Mountain attractions, hinting at the new storyline.

Despite the ride being a year away from opening, some guests have expressed concerns about its plot. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is set after the events of “Princess and the Frog,” with Princess Tiana running an employee-owned food cooperative and restaurant on an old Louisiana salt dome.

A Reddit user, u/Knarky, shared a construction sign at Disneyland Park, raising questions about the “Employee Owned” aspect of Tiana’s Foods. Others joined the discussion, pointing out the discrepancy between the fictional storyline and Disney’s real-world treatment of its employees.

Critics found it ironic and hypocritical for Disney, a corporation not known for employee ownership or paying its cast members a living wage, to create a themed restaurant centered around the concept of employee ownership.

Some felt that the storyline could detract from the overall guest experience by bringing real-world labor issues and corporate practices into focus. They believed that Disney’s choice to theme the ride this way was out of touch with the current climate and raised concerns about the disconnect between the fantasy of an employee-owned business in the park and the reality of Disney’s employment practices.
