Dragon Ball fans recently made an intriguing discovery about the inspiration behind one of the series’ major villains. It turns out that Frieza, known as a ruthless galactic tyrant, was actually based on a group of people that Dragon Ball Z creator Akira Toriyama referred to as the “worst kind of people.” These individuals were the real estate speculators who took advantage of Japan’s economic bubble in the late 1980s.
Similar to these “house flippers,” who would buy and sell properties at inflated prices, Frieza would conquer planets and strip them of their inhabitants before reselling them. Toriyama used the character of Frieza to harshly critique these real estate speculators, depicting their cruelty through the villain’s methodical approach to genocide.
Dragon Ball fans quickly noticed the parallels between Frieza and house flippers, pointing out his professional manner of speech and business-like attitude towards conquering. He was often described as a “punch-clock villain” who treated planet conquest as just another part of his day job, lacking the emotional malice one might expect from a villain. However, as the series progressed and Frieza’s character evolved, his motivations shifted from cold calculation to a more personal vendetta against Goku. This change coincided with Japan’s economic bubble bursting and the decline of real estate speculators in the early 1990s.
Since his debut in 1989, Frieza has undergone significant character development, transforming from Goku’s sworn enemy to an unlikely ally in Dragon Ball Super’s “Universe Survival Saga.” Dragon Ball Super serves as a sequel to the original Dragon Ball series, keeping the beloved characters and their adventures alive for a new generation of fans. The anime aired from 2015 to 2018, while the manga is still ongoing in V Jump magazine, spanning 21 volumes at the time of writing. Dragon Ball Super has also spawned highly successful feature films, with 2018’s Dragon Ball Super: Broly holding the title of the franchise’s highest-grossing movie to date.
Fans can enjoy both Dragon Ball Super and its predecessor, Dragon Ball Z, by streaming them on Crunchyroll. English versions of new Dragon Ball Super manga chapters are available from VIZ Media, allowing fans to continue following the captivating saga.
