Acclaimed manga artist Yusei Matsui, best known as the creator of Assassination Classroom, has made a delightful contribution to the ongoing Dragon Ball Super Gallery Project, showcasing his unique artistic take on the beloved franchise.
The latest addition to the project is a captivating cover illustration created by Yusei Matsui, which was recently unveiled by Weekly Shonen Jump News – Unofficial. As part of this anniversary initiative, guest artists have been invited to reimagine the iconic artwork from Akira Toriyama’s original Dragon Ball manga series in their own distinctive styles. While some artists have faithfully recreated Toriyama’s illustrations, and others have taken inspiration to create original artwork, Matsui has ingeniously merged the two approaches.
Matsui’s contribution cleverly pays homage to Toriyama’s original manga cover while infusing it with his signature playful and lighthearted style. The majority of the image faithfully mirrors Toriyama’s artwork, depicting a stern-looking Piccolo with a young Gohan cheerfully waving in the background. However, Matsui has replaced the faces of the characters with simple shapes and expressions reminiscent of the endearing alien teacher, Koro-sensei, from his own Assassination Classroom series.
The specific manga volume that Matsui chose to reinterpret is the 20th installment, originally released in Japan in 1989. By reimagining this particular cover, Matsui not only showcases his artistic prowess but also pays homage to the rich history and longevity of the Dragon Ball franchise.
The Dragon Ball Super Gallery Project, organized by Shueisha, has set out on an ambitious endeavor to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Goku’s debut adventure. Each month, a renowned Shonen Jump manga creator is selected to recreate one of Akira Toriyama’s 42 original Dragon Ball manga covers. This initiative aims to celebrate the enduring popularity of the series and its significant impact on the world of manga and anime.
Matsui’s artwork follows the footsteps of other illustrious creators who have contributed to the Dragon Ball Super Gallery Project. Notable artists such as Masashi Kishimoto (creator of Naruto), Tite Kubo (creator of Bleach), Tatsuki Fujimoto (creator of Chainsaw Man), and Tatsuya Endo (artist of Spy x Family) have all left their unique mark on this extraordinary project. Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro, the creator of Toriko, was the artist behind the previous month’s entry, offering a stunning tribute to Goku and Vegeta’s momentous battle on Earth.
Dragon Ball, which first debuted in 1984, has achieved tremendous success and has become the third best-selling manga series in history, with over 260 million copies in circulation worldwide. The timeless adventures of Goku continue to captivate audiences, with the ongoing Dragon Ball Super manga overseen by Toriyama himself and illustrated by Toyotarou, his talented protégé. To add to the excitement, a highly anticipated new Dragon Ball movie titled “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” is scheduled for release in Japan on June 11, followed by a North American release later this summer. While Matsui’s artwork brings focus to Piccolo and Gohan, fans can expect the film to showcase their beloved characters in their familiar and iconic appearances.
Yusei Matsui’s imaginative contribution to the Dragon Ball Super Gallery Project not only showcases his creative prowess but also reinforces the enduring legacy of Dragon Ball, capturing the hearts of fans both new and old.
