In the world of Dragon Ball, Goku is one of the most beloved and iconic characters in anime history. From his first appearance as a young, naive boy with incredible strength, to his current status as a warrior who has saved the universe multiple times, Goku has always been at the forefront of the franchise’s popularity. One of the most exciting things about Goku is his ability to grow and improve as a fighter, constantly pushing himself to new levels of power and unlocking new abilities along the way.
One such ability is Ultra Instinct, which is an angelic technique/transformation that even cosmic gods like Lord Beerus have trouble mastering. This technique requires the user to completely let go and allow their body to move freely of their mind, resulting in their opponent being utterly incapable of hitting them. Goku started training with the Angel, Whis, with the goal of mastering Ultra Instinct, even if he wasn’t fully aware of it at the time. It wasn’t until he unwittingly unlocked Ultra Instinct while fighting Jiren during the Tournament of Power in Dragon Ball Super that he realized the true potential of the technique.
However, it turns out that Goku had already unlocked a similar ability in Dragon Ball GT, long before Dragon Ball Super was ever conceived. In episode 58 of Dragon Ball GT, Goku is fighting Syn Shenron, the last of the Shadow Dragons, right before the villain absorbs the other Dragon Balls and becomes the iconic Omega Shenron. Unfortunately, Goku was blinded by his previous Shadow Dragon opponent before his fight with Syn Shenron began, and he hasn’t recovered since. Despite being unable to see, Goku was able to retain his Super Saiyan 4 form and stay in the battle after Trunks, Goten, and Gohan transferred their energy to him. This allowed him to dodge Syn Shenron’s attacks without even needing to see them, as his body was able to sense Syn Shenron’s ki right before the Shadow Dragon made contact. Essentially, Goku’s body was acting autonomously while powered up to its maximum in Super Saiyan 4.
This ability is similar to Ultra Instinct in that Goku was able to react without thinking, and even without the ability to see, while battling a god-tier opponent. It’s a massive revelation, especially when considering how difficult it is to even scratch the surface of Ultra Instinct in Dragon Ball Super, let alone master the form/technique. What’s even more intriguing is that this similarity between the two separate abilities gives further evidence to suggest that Super Saiyan 4 is secretly a Saiyan God form. Many fans have speculated that this is the case, that SSJ4 was mislabeled and is actually Super Saiyan God, and the fact that being a strong enough Super Saiyan 4 can unlock a power akin to Ultra Instinct only adds fuel to that theory. Regardless of whether or not the theory is true, the fact remains that Goku’s Super Saiyan 4 form essentially gave him the power of Ultra Instinct long before that angelic form was ever written in Dragon Ball Super.
