Kung Fu Panda 4′ Boosts Franchise Revenue Over $2 Billion in Strong Third Weekend

Dreamworks Animation’s latest installment, ‘Kung Fu Panda 4,’ directed by the talented duo of Mike Mitchell and Stephanie Ma Stine, showcased its dominance at the global box office during its recent weekend release, boasting an impressive estimated gross of $72 million worldwide. This accomplishment proved pivotal as it propelled the beloved Kung Fu Panda franchise beyond the coveted $2 billion mark, placing it in esteemed company alongside other highly successful Dreamworks properties such as ‘Madagascar’ ($2.27 billion) and ‘Shrek’ ($4.03 billion), solidifying its status as a box office powerhouse.

Amid its third weekend in theaters, ‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ continued to captivate audiences internationally, accumulating an impressive total of $55.3 million. This success was particularly notable in key markets such as China, where the film debuted at the top of the box office charts with a commendable opening weekend haul of $26 million. Additionally, in Brazil, ‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ achieved the second-best opening ever for a Dreamworks film, amassing $2.5 million in ticket sales. The film also secured top spots in other territories including Italy, where it grossed $4.4 million, and the Netherlands, where it earned $1.5 million.

On the domestic front, ‘Kung Fu Panda 4,’ distributed by Universal Pictures, maintained a strong presence in theaters, securing the third position at the box office with earnings of $16.8 million from a wide release in 3,805 theaters across North America. This brings the film’s total domestic earnings to an impressive $133.2 million, further solidifying its commercial success.

While early projections indicate that ‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ is on track to surpass the box office performance of its franchise sequels, industry analysts anticipate that it may fall short of the original film’s lifetime box office earnings of $631.7 million. Nonetheless, the continued success of the franchise underscores its enduring popularity and appeal among audiences worldwide.

In contrast, Disney’s latest offering, ‘Luca,’ faced a more modest reception during its theatrical release. Despite its wide distribution in 1,390 theaters, the film garnered relatively modest earnings of $550,000, with a per-screen average of $395. This performance mirrors the lackluster opening weekends of previous pandemic-era Pixar releases such as ‘Soul’ and ‘Turning Red,’ signaling potential challenges for Disney’s theatrical distribution strategy amidst the ongoing uncertainties of the global pandemic.
