Focus on improving DC Comics movies instead of the DCU

Currently, we’re gearing up for James Gunn to kickstart the DCU with his Superman film next year. Despite this, some relieved fans note that upcoming sequels like The Batman 2 and Joker 2 are still moving forward, even outside the new cinematic universe. Yet, observing Marvel’s recent challenges and superhero fatigue, I’ve reached a simple conclusion: James Gunn should abandon the DCU and concentrate on producing superior movies based on the best DC comics.

Marvel’s recent decline illustrates why Gunn should let go of the DCU. Initially, the DCEU was Warner Bros’ attempt to emulate the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, Marvel’s overabundance of content has led to what we now term “superhero fatigue.”

Fans are growing weary of the need for prerequisite viewing before fully enjoying new Marvel projects. This contrasts with the success of standalone DC films like Aquaman and Wonder Woman, as well as hits outside the DCEU like The Batman and Joker.

The lesson from both Marvel and the DCEU is clear: fans desire good stories featuring compelling characters over forced interconnected universes. Therefore, Warner Bros. and Gunn should focus on creating quality films without overreliance on interconnected cameos.

By abandoning the DCU, the opportunity arises to directly adapt iconic DC comic stories that might otherwise be challenging to incorporate. This includes classics like Batman: Death in the Family or All-Star Superman, which may not fit within a larger cinematic universe structure.

While this shift in approach seems wise, it’s uncertain if Warner Bros. will readily abandon the DCU concept they’ve heavily invested in. Nevertheless, it’s a path worth considering, offering the chance to create cinematic masterpieces that resonate with fans, without being shackled to the constraints of a shared universe.
