Zack Snyder’s Justice League unveils Hal Jordan’s unused Green Lantern design

New concept art from the DCEU sheds light on early designs for Hal Jordan, also known as Green Lantern, in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Despite the conclusion of the Snyderverse in 2023, details continue to emerge about the ideas that were considered but ultimately left unrealized in the DC Extended Universe.

While Snyder had the opportunity to explore various DC characters in his films, including major ones, Hal Jordan never made an appearance. Concept artist Jerad S. Marantz has now revealed his designs for the iconic Green Lantern, offering a glimpse into how the character’s costume could have looked, with a more faithful adaptation compared to Ryan Reynolds’ portrayal in the 2011 Green Lantern film. Marantz also disclosed the involvement of DCEU costume designer Michael Wilkinson in shaping Green Lantern’s appearance in Snyder’s vision.

Although the Green Lantern mythology played a significant role in Snyder’s plans for Justice League sequels, certain elements, like Wayne T. Carr’s portrayal of John Stewart, were left on the cutting room floor due to studio decisions. However, Snyder intended for Hal and other Green Lanterns to feature prominently in the final battle against Darkseid in his envisioned Justice League 3. Despite initial plans to incorporate Ryan Reynolds as a new version of Hal Jordan, this idea never materialized.

Moving forward, Hal and John will have a place in the Lanterns TV show as part of James Gunn’s DC Universe, signaling continued investment in these characters. As the DC Universe progresses, it remains to be seen how the Green Lantern lore would have been executed in Snyder’s Justice League had his vision been fully realized.
