Zack Snyder wished for Man of Steel in The Dark Knight Universe with a different Batman than Christian Bale

Christopher Nolan, director of ‘The Dark Knight Trilogy,’ also wrote the story for ‘Man of Steel’ and served as a producer. Zack Snyder recently concluded his DC Extended Universe (DCEU) journey with “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” facing challenges and fan dissatisfaction throughout the ten-year endeavor.

In the early stages of planning ‘Man of Steel’ and its sequel ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice,’ Snyder envisioned connecting Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight universe with the DCEU. This connection would involve Joseph Gordon-Levitt taking on the role of Batman. While Nolan aimed to keep his trilogy separate, the idea of linking the two universes wasn’t entirely dismissed. However, the use of Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne was ruled out due to the character’s passing of the baton to Gordon-Levitt’s John Blake in ‘The Dark Knight Rises.’

Although Ben Affleck had not yet been cast as Batman during the initial announcement of ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice,’ Snyder considered a Batman film with Gordon-Levitt. Ultimately, they opted against it, anticipating fan preference for Bruce Wayne as Batman.

Even though Snyder explored Batman’s character in ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’ and ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League,’ he expressed a continued interest in directing a Batman film. Specifically, he mentioned a desire to adapt Frank Miller’s iconic graphic novel ‘The Dark Knight Returns,’ known for its gritty portrayal of an older Batman. Snyder envisioned a standalone project, adopting a Watchmen-style approach with a focus on grittiness.

Snyder, known for his adaptation of ‘Watchmen,’ left the DCU midway during the production of the Justice League film due to personal reasons. Joss Whedon took over to complete the film, which faced controversy and resulted in disappointing box office performance. Despite the challenges, Snyder still holds an interest in exploring Batman’s character in a unique and gritty adaptation of ‘The Dark Knight Returns.
