Aquaman 2 Joins DCEU’s Top 10 Highest-Grossing Movies

In spite of receiving a mixed critical reception, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom defied expectations at the box office, solidifying its standing as the 7th highest-grossing film in the DCEU globally and the 9th highest domestically. The film’s remarkable performance served as a testament to the enduring popularity and box office draw of Jason Momoa, who portrayed Aquaman with undeniable charisma and authenticity.

Notably, the DCEU experienced a significant shift in late 2022 and early 2023 with the announcement of the DC Universe, a reboot helmed by James Gunn and Peter Safran. While this reboot excluded Henry Cavill’s Superman and Ben Affleck’s Batman from the outset, it left room for the potential return of certain DCEU characters and the continuation of specific storylines, such as those featuring Blue Beetle, Amanda Waller, and Peacemaker. This revelation may have influenced the lackluster performances of the DCEU’s final four films in 2023, as viewers’ investment in the existing storyline decreased with the knowledge of an impending reboot.

Aquaman 2’s remarkable success, however, emerged as a standout amidst the underperformance of other 2023 DCEU installments, including Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, and Blue Beetle. Despite the latter two films featuring lead actors and characters transitioning into the new DC Universe, Aquaman 2 managed to outshine its counterparts, accumulating over $413 million worldwide. This achievement further underscores the unique appeal of Momoa’s portrayal of Aquaman and its positive impact on the film’s global box office figures.

The broader success of Aquaman and its sequel can be attributed to multiple factors, one of which is Jason Momoa’s undeniable star power that extends beyond the confines of the Aquaman character. Momoa, alongside director James Wan, successfully reinvigorated the image of the iconic aquatic hero, dispelling years of dismissal and mockery. Instead of attempting to overhaul Aquaman’s character, Momoa and Wan embraced the hero’s fascinating lore and characterization from the comics, portraying him authentically and earnestly.

Despite Aquaman 2’s triumph, uncertainties linger about Jason Momoa’s future as Aquaman in the DC Universe. While rumors have circulated about Momoa potentially taking on the role of the alien mercenary Lobo, nothing has been officially confirmed. Momoa himself has expressed reservations about reprising the role of Aquaman in Gunn and Safran’s universe. Regardless of his future endeavors within the new franchise, Momoa’s undeniable success and cultural impact as the DCEU’s Aquaman, evident in both Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, remain indisputable.
