Shrek 5 completes DreamWorks’ 20-year plan, addressing Shrek Forever After issues

DreamWorks has officially announced the development of “Shrek 5,” marking the realization of a 20-year plan for the beloved franchise that initially faced complications with “Shrek Forever After.” Originally launched in 2001, the Shrek series gained popularity, with the fourth installment concluding the main narrative in 2010. Despite subsequent expansions like the Puss in Boots films, the desire for a fifth Shrek movie persisted.

The confirmation of “Shrek 5” in 2023 raised excitement, although details about the film’s plot remain scarce. While Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz are expected to reprise their roles, the storyline post “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” is yet to be unveiled. DreamWorks’ commitment to Shrek 5 is particularly noteworthy considering the prolonged uncertainty surrounding the franchise’s future.

Interestingly, DreamWorks had envisioned “Shrek 5” as early as 2004, as Jeffrey Katzenberg revealed plans for the third and fourth entries at Cannes. The initial concept intended for Shrek 5 to be the franchise’s grand finale, addressing unanswered questions about Shrek’s origin. However, this vision took almost 20 years to materialize, surprising audiences who had been anticipating the sequel for years.

The delay in bringing “Shrek 5” to fruition can be traced back to alterations during the development of “Shrek Forever After.” Originally not intended as the franchise’s conclusion, the fourth film underwent a significant retcon about a year into development. Jeffrey Katzenberg decided that the story crafted for “Shrek Forever After” provided a fitting end to Shrek’s journey, eliminating the need for a fifth installment. This decision, while flattering to the creative team, was later revisited by Katzenberg, opening the door for the possibility of “Shrek 5.”

Now, with the green light for “Shrek 5,” DreamWorks has an opportunity to deliver a more satisfying conclusion than “Shrek Forever After.” The fifth installment can address the issues that plagued its predecessor and offer a proper farewell to the iconic franchise. As the final chapter is crafted with intent from the outset, “Shrek 5” holds the promise of being a more successful and well-received entry, ensuring a fitting end to Shrek’s cinematic journey.
