Universal Pictures has officially announced that the highly anticipated animated feature “Dog Man,” adapted from the beloved kids’ graphic novels by Dav Pilkey, is scheduled to hit theaters on January 31, 2025. This announcement comes after the project was initially unveiled in December 2020, creating considerable excitement among fans of Pilkey’s imaginative and humorous storytelling.
The chosen release date was previously reserved for an “Untitled DreamWorks Animation Film,” strategically positioned between the release of an untitled Disney animated film in November 2024 and the anticipated Smurfs musical in February 2025. This scheduling reflects a careful consideration of the competitive landscape, ensuring “Dog Man” has a comfortable space within the family-friendly animation market.
“Dog Man” marks a reunion between Dav Pilkey and Peter Hastings, a six-time Emmy-winning director known for his work on “Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness.” Hastings, who executive produced the Captain Underpants TV series and specials from 2018 to 2020, brings his creative expertise to this new project. Karen Foster, acclaimed for her work on “Spirit Untamed,” serves as the producer of the upcoming animated film.
The storyline of “Dog Man” revolves around the titular hybrid hero, born from an unprecedented surgery that stitches together a human police officer and a dog after they are injured together on the job. With a nose for justice and an amusing weakness for chasing squirrels, Dog Man embarks on a relentless pursuit of the feline supervillain, Petey the Cat. However, the narrative takes an intriguing turn with the introduction of the adorable kitten, Lil Petey, altering the dynamics of their interactions.
“Dog Man” originated as a spin-off of the wildly successful “Captain Underpants” series and was conceived as a creation by the imaginative protagonists George and Harold. The graphic novels made their debut in 2016 through Scholastic, with the 12th installment, titled “Dog Man: The Scarlet Shedder,” scheduled for release in March. The series has achieved phenomenal success, with translations in 45 languages and over 60 million copies sold in print. The overwhelming popularity of “Dog Man” even gave rise to a bestseller spinoff titled “Cat Kid Comic Club,” released in 2020.
As the release date approaches, fans eagerly anticipate seeing Pilkey’s whimsical characters and humor come to life on the big screen, promising an entertaining and heartwarming cinematic experience for audiences of all ages.
