What became of Watto in Star Wars?

The intriguing story of Watto, the Tatooine junk dealer in Star Wars, unfolds in a tale marked by chance encounters and pivotal decisions. Watto played a crucial role in the early life of Anakin Skywalker, contributing to the latter’s journey to becoming a Jedi. As the owner of Watto’s Junkshop in Mos Espa, Watto was the last master of Anakin and his mother, Shmi, before their liberation from slavery.

In The Phantom Menace, Watto’s gambling habit and penchant for making deals thrust him into a pivotal moment in the Star Wars saga. Approached by Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn in need of a hyperdrive generator, Watto agreed to a bet involving Anakin’s participation in the Boonta Eve Classic podrace. Anakin’s victory not only secured the needed parts for Qui-Gon but also paved the way for Anakin’s training as a Jedi, fulfilling the prophecy of the Chosen One.

After losing Anakin, Watto’s life took a downturn. His business declined, and he reluctantly traded Shmi to a moisture farmer named Cliegg Lars for essential parts. Watto’s role shifted as he grappled with the void left by Anakin’s absence, hiring Anakin’s childhood friend Wald as an assistant.

Amid the rise of the Galactic Empire, Tatooine fell under Imperial control, compelling Watto to assist the Empire due to his reputation as a junk dealer. Despite his reluctance, Watto found himself involved in Imperial tasks, reluctantly helping retrieve parts for the Empire and their cargo.

Watto’s final on-screen appearances occurred in The Phantom Menace and briefly in Attack of the Clones. However, the richness of his story is further explored in various Star Wars media, including junior novels, online comic book series, and video games. These narratives delve into Watto’s post-Anakin life, offering fans additional insights into the character’s journey.

In a notable turn of events, Watto decided to retire and handed over his shop, Watto’s Junkshop, to Wald, who renamed it Wald’s Parts. As Watto’s story concludes, it leaves a lasting imprint on the Star Wars universe, showcasing the ripple effects of seemingly small decisions on the larger narrative canvas.
