James Gunn clarifies the upcoming DC animated movie is unrelated to the DCU

DC Studios co-chair and co-CEO, James Gunn, recently provided clarification regarding the upcoming animated adaptation of Crisis on Infinite Earths, dispelling any notion that it would be linked to the larger DC Universe (DCU). Despite the source material’s inclination to tie into the DCU’s transition from the DC Extended Universe, Gunn, responding to a fan query on Threads, firmly stated that there would be no such connection.

The animated project, unveiled alongside a Watchmen adaptation at the 2023 San Diego Comic-Con, draws inspiration from the 1980s 12-issue limited comic book series. This iconic storyline revolves around the cataclysmic destruction of the DC Multiverse orchestrated by the formidable Anti-Monitor. After an epic collaboration between remaining heroes and villains, they manage to thwart the Anti-Monitor and bring about the creation of a singular Earth.

A significant development accompanying this revelation was the release of the first trailer for Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part One in December 2023. The trailer not only heightened anticipation but also unveiled the impressive voice cast for the animated adaptation. The stellar lineup includes Darren Criss as Superman and Earth-2 Superman, Stana Katic as Wonder Woman and Superwoman, Jensen Ackles as Batman, Matt Bomer as The Flash, and a host of other talented actors reprising their roles from previous Tomorrowverse installments.

However, amidst the excitement for Crisis on Infinite Earths, Gunn’s vision for the DC Universe takes a unique trajectory. Instead of commencing with the Crisis trilogy, his DCU journey begins with a distinct animated project – Creature Commandos. This Max animated series, set for release in late 2024, is poised to act as a precursor, introducing audiences to the DCU before the official launch with Superman: Legacy in July 2025. Creature Commandos, rooted in a 1980s comic team, will be centered around Amanda Waller (played by Viola Davis), who assembles a black ops team led by Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr.

Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part One is scheduled for digital release on January 9, followed by the 4K UHD and Blu-ray release on January 23. This revelation adds another layer of anticipation as fans look forward to experiencing both the Crisis trilogy and the broader vision James Gunn has in store for the DC Universe.
