Marvel Zombies TV Series on Disney+ to Diverge from Original Comic Storyline

In a recent insightful interview on the Phase Zero podcast, Bryan Andrews, the executive producer of Marvel Zombies, provided a glimpse into the highly-anticipated Marvel Studios series. Andrews, in particular, hinted at the mature and intense tone that viewers can expect, confirming the producers’ intention to secure a TV-MA rating for the show. This revelation suggests that Marvel Zombies is poised to explore darker and more complex themes, diverging from the typical superhero fare associated with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Moreover, Andrews conveyed a clear message to fans, emphasizing that the series would not strictly adhere to its source material, the Marvel Zombies comic series. Instead, the creators are set to present their unique interpretation and narrative twist on the zombie concept within the Marvel Universe. By distancing the series from the original comic, Andrews hinted at a fresh and unpredictable storyline that will keep both avid comic readers and new viewers on the edge of their seats.

Andrews shed light on the origins of this approach, mentioning Episode 105 of the What If…? series as a significant precursor. The groundwork laid in this episode, along with the contributions of the talented What If…? writers, has set the stage for Marvel Zombies to venture into uncharted territory within the established Marvel multiverse. The promise of exploring the mythology of the zombie concept in greater depth further fuels anticipation, with Andrews teasing that fans are in for a “crazy” and unexpected ride.

One notable revelation from the interview is the central role that Ms. Marvel, played by Iman Vellani, will undertake in the Marvel Zombies series. Vellani herself confirmed the significance of her character, Kamala Khan, in the show, describing her as the “center” of the narrative. Drawing an intriguing parallel, Vellani likened Kamala Khan to Frodo from The Lord of the Rings, suggesting a pivotal journey or quest that the character will lead, potentially hinting at a significant and heroic role in the face of the impending zombie scourge.

Directed by Bryan Andrews and featuring a screenplay by Zeb Wells, who also serves as an executive producer, Marvel Zombies is expected to provide a fresh perspective on the Marvel Universe. The animated series will reimagine the iconic universe as a new generation of heroes grapples with the relentless and ever-expanding threat of a zombie apocalypse. As fans eagerly await the series, Andrews’ revelations have added an extra layer of anticipation, promising a mature, distinct, and thrilling Marvel experience.
