‘Migration’ Secures Significant Victory in Worldwide Box Office

The latest animated offering from Illumination, featuring the vocal talents of Kumail Nanjiani and Elizabeth Banks, has achieved a noteworthy milestone in the global box office arena. The year 2023 witnessed Universal Studios reclaiming the title of the most successful studio—a feat not accomplished since 2015. While major contributors to this triumph included blockbuster releases like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Oppenheimer, smaller hits such as Trolls Band Together and the recently premiered Migration also played pivotal roles in bolstering Universal’s cinematic dominance.

Migration, the newest animated film from Illumination, successfully surpassed the coveted $100 million mark in global box office revenue after three weeks of release worldwide. Despite making its domestic debut a week later, the film claimed the third spot at the extended New Year’s box office, amassing an impressive $17 million domestically over the traditional three-day weekend. Notably, this marked a substantial nearly 40% increase from its opening weekend earnings of $12 million. To date, Migration has grossed over $54 million domestically and $46 million from overseas markets, resulting in a cumulative global haul of $100 million.

The film’s promising journey at the box office is just beginning. Movies released during the holiday season often exhibit long-lasting popularity, and in the post-pandemic era, family-oriented films like Migration tend to sustain revenue generation over several weeks if well-received. For instance, Elemental, despite initially reporting one of the worst openings in Pixar history, concluded its run with nearly $500 million worldwide. Similarly, at the same time last year, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which opened to similar numbers as Migration, ended up grossing almost $500 million globally.

Migration’s success marks yet another triumph for Illumination, renowned for its impeccable track record. The animation studio has delivered hit franchises such as Despicable Me and Sing, along with blockbusters like The Secret Life of Pets, which garnered nearly $900 million worldwide. Furthermore, The Super Mario Bros. Movie remains the second-highest-grossing film of 2023, raking in over $1.3 billion globally. With Migration potentially spawning sequels, Illumination could soon boast a portfolio of five franchises.

Critical reception for Migration has been predominantly positive, reflected in its current “fresh” 72% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. The film, produced on a reported budget of $72 million—a common range for contemporary animated films—underlines the trend of studios keeping budgets in check, with exceptions like Disney’s continued investments exceeding $150 million for its animated productions.

Directed by Benjamin Renner, co-directed by Guylo Homsy, and written by Mike White, Migration features a star-studded cast including Kumail Nanjiani, Elizabeth Banks, Keegan-Michael Key, Awkwafina, and Danny DeVito. As audiences continue to flock to theaters, the film’s positive trajectory at the box office aligns with Illumination’s reputation for delivering entertaining and successful animated productions.
