Kahhori actor from ‘What If…?’ aims to bring Marvel character to live-action

Devery Jacobs, known for her role in Marvel Studios’ “What If…?” as the voice of Kahhori, is expressing her desire to continue embodying the Marvel character, whether in the realm of animation or live-action. Jacobs, who debuted as Kahhori in Season 2, Episode 6 of the animated series, is concurrently set to portray a character named Bonnie in Marvel’s upcoming live-action series, Echo, a spin-off from the Hawkeye narrative.

While confirming that Bonnie and Kahhori are distinct characters with no familial ties, Jacobs remains open to reprising the role of Kahhori if Marvel decides to explore the character further in future projects. The actor shared her sentiments, stating, “I have been really fortunate to play the character Bonnie in the new Echo series. I don’t know, they’ve brought other people back in multiple roles. So I leave that up to the higher-ups at the MCU. But I just love this character of Kahhori so much, and would love to be able to bring her to life, whether that’s live-action, or whether that’s through animation. I’ll always be there for that.”

It’s worth noting that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has seen instances of actors taking on multiple roles. Gemma Chan, for instance, played both Minn-Erva in “Captain Marvel” and Sersi in “Eternals.” This trend extends beyond the cinematic releases, reaching into Marvel’s pre-Disney+ television series like Netflix’s “Luke Cage,” where Alfre Woodard played both Black Mariah and Miriam Sharpe in “Captain America: Civil War.” Similarly, Mahershala Ali, who portrayed Cottonmouth in “Luke Cage,” is slated to take on the role of Blade in the MCU.

However, the dynamics change when it comes to the voice actors featured in “What If…?” While some MCU veterans reprise their roles for the Disney+ animated series, others do not. Notable examples include Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter and Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, who voice their characters in “What If…?” On the contrary, other characters are voiced by different actors, such as Mick Wingert as Iron Man in place of Robert Downey Jr. and Hudson Thames as Spider-Man instead of Tom Holland.

Kahhori stands out as a unique case within the “What If…?” series. As the first superhero specifically created for Marvel Studios’ cinematic multiverse, Kahhori lacks a comic-book counterpart, making her origins intricately tied to Devery Jacobs’ portrayal. In the “What If…?” narrative, Kahhori is a Mohawk woman who acquires powers from the Tesseract, utilizing them to resist Spanish conquistadors and alter the course of history. The conclusion of Kahhori’s introductory episode strongly hints at her return, as she finds herself visited by the enigmatic Strange Supreme.

While the first seven episodes of “What If…?” Season 2 are currently available for streaming on Disney+, the anticipation for Devery Jacobs’ potential return as Kahhori, whether in animation or live-action, adds an intriguing layer to Marvel’s evolving multiverse narrative.
