Writer Clarifies Wasp’s Appearance in What If…? Season 2

A.C. Bradley, the lead writer for Marvel Studios’ Disney+ animated series What If…?, has shed light on the appearance of the Wasp in Season 2, Episode 5. In this episode, titled “What If… Captain Carter Fought the Hydra Stomper?” an alternate version of the Battle of New York unfolds, featuring a team led by Captain Carter, alongside Iron Man, Thor, Hawkeye, Black Widow, and surprisingly, the Wasp. Bradley confirmed in a Twitter thread that this version of the Wasp is indeed Hope Van Dyne, explaining how her heroic journey diverges from the main Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) counterpart.

According to Bradley, Captain Carter’s alteration of history by ending World War II led to an immediate feminist movement, resulting in a ripple effect across society. This shift led to more female SHIELD agents, heroes, and women in positions of authority. Without Peggy Carter to establish SHIELD, the responsibility fell to Hope’s parents, Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne, along with Bucky Barnes and Howard Stark. Consequently, Hope assumed the Wasp mantle earlier in this altered timeline.

Bradley also shared additional details about the universe where Captain Carter became the first Avenger, including Bucky surviving the war and becoming an elder statesman reminiscent of Jimmy Carter. Howard Stark didn’t die in 1991, and in Bradley’s vision, he was a better father with a closer relationship to his son.

The writer wrapped up by noting that Tony Stark and Bruce Banner maintain their roles as the “mad genius science bros” and revealed that the Captain Carter biopic was a musical, although not yet a Broadway play.

What If…? originally premiered on Disney+ in 2021, offering a reimagining of crucial MCU events and exploring parallel realities. The series is set for a third season, and a Marvel Zombies spin-off is also in development. The first six episodes of What If…? Season 2 are currently available for streaming on Disney+, with the remaining three episodes set to release daily through Saturday, December 30.
