Fans Express Concerns About the MCU’s Future After Jonathan Majors’ Departure

The dismissal of Jonathan Majors, initially cast as Kang the Conqueror in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has sparked extensive speculation regarding the future of this pivotal character. The uncertainty surrounding Majors’ Marvel tenure began in March when he faced assault accusations from his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari, leading to his arrest. While Majors’ management team severed ties with him, and at least one advertising partner distanced themselves, Marvel’s stance remained ambiguous until recently.

Despite his legal troubles, Loki Season 2, in which Majors played an alternate timeline version of Kang, proceeded with its scheduled streaming release, creating an impression that he might continue in the role for future MCU tentpole projects. However, on December 18, Majors was found guilty of two misdemeanor counts of harassment and assault, prompting Marvel Studios to release an official statement declaring his immediate departure from the MCU in any capacity.

This development poses a considerable challenge for Marvel, given the extensive groundwork laid for a Kang-centric storyline over the past two years. The narrative, initiated in Loki Season 1 in 2021, reached its zenith in this year’s Quantumania, leaving the threat of numerous multiverse-spanning versions of Kang, all portrayed by Majors. The actor was poised to sustain this significant role until at least 2026.

Marvel now faces a critical decision: to pivot dramatically and rewrite future projects to exclude Kang, potentially risking the consistent quality of storytelling in the post-Endgame MCU era, or to expediently recast the character. Fortunately, Loki has established an in-universe precedent for the concept of “variants,” allowing for different actors to portray characters.

As the news of Marvel and Majors parting ways circulated, speculation intensified regarding potential replacements for Kang the Conqueror. Several Black actors have been suggested for the role, including John David Washington of Tenet, John Boyega renowned for his time in Star Wars, Trevante Rhodes, who earned acclaim for his role in the Oscar-winning Moonlight, Aldis Hodge from Black Adam, and Yahya Abdul Mateen II, who has previously portrayed a DC villain and Dr. Manhattan. Despite Boyega’s humorous dismissal of the rumors on Twitter, some fans are contemplating the idea of introducing Dr. Doom as a compelling alternative antagonist at this crucial juncture in the MCU narrative.
