The Flash suggests DCEU Justice League could have outshone the Avengers

The Flash, the latest installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), not only marks the return of the cinematic Barry Allen but also provides a glimpse into the potential greatness of the DCEU Justice League. This film, released in 2023, brings together a myriad of heroes, including Sasha Calle’s Supergirl and Michael Keaton’s Batman, in addition to a brief but impactful appearance of two iconic DCEU Justice League members.

The movie kicks off with a thrilling sequence in its first act, where The Flash, Batman, and Wonder Woman join forces to thwart a group of terrorists attempting to seize a deadly biological weapon in Gotham City. With Superman and Wonder Woman preoccupied elsewhere, Flash races to the scene to save innocent lives, while Batman pursues the criminals in his own unique style. The ensuing collaboration showcases the chemistry and skills of the DCEU Justice League, offering a delightful mix of visual gags, genuine heroism, and character-driven comedy.

As Flash races to save a maternity ward, the audience is treated to a blend of exciting action beats and lighthearted moments. Batman, using a combination of cutting-edge technology and physical prowess, apprehends the criminals and prevents their escape. The day is ultimately saved by the timely arrival of Wonder Woman, using her Lasso of Truth to prevent the biological agent from falling into the river. However, this heroic act unintentionally leads to some uncomfortable truths about Batman when he is ensnared by the Lasso.

What sets this DCEU Justice League apart in The Flash is the genuine camaraderie and lightness between the heroes. Unlike the more dramatic and inconsistent portrayal of the team in the 2017 Justice League film, this new iteration brings out different shades of character through their conflicting personalities. The differing skill sets and powers of the heroes complement each other, resulting in a dynamic and visually stunning team-up that ranges from impressive to outright silly.

The DCEU Justice League’s appearance in The Flash raises an intriguing proposition: the potential for this team to have surpassed Marvel’s Avengers in terms of charm and fun. The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Avengers were often depicted individually, with fewer instances of them working cohesively as a full team. In contrast, The Flash showcases the DCEU heroes working together seamlessly, delivering the impressive visuals expected from a superhero team-up while emphasizing the idea that superheroes can and should be a lot of fun.

This iteration of the Justice League, if given the right direction and storytelling, could have offered a brighter and more enjoyable take on the superhero team, potentially surpassing the MCU’s highly-valued sense of charm and fun. Unfortunately, the DCEU Justice League has had a mixed history, with audiences not fully witnessing the potential of this iteration. The success of the Justice League scene in The Flash serves as a lesson for the DC Universe, demonstrating how a consistent, lighter approach could elevate the team to new cinematic heights, setting it apart from its past and even rivaling the beloved charm of Marvel’s Avengers.
