The creators of ‘Wish’ used an Excel spreadsheet to manage the numerous Disney Easter eggs featured in the movie

Disney’s 62nd animated feature, “Wish,” is a treasure trove of Disney Easter eggs, paying homage to the studio’s animation history more extensively than any of its predecessors. The film, centered around 17-year-old Asha’s quest to save wishes from the villainous King Magnifico, also acts as an origin story for the iconic wishing star seen in classics like “Pinocchio” and “The Princess and the Frog.”

Director Chris Buck, known for “Frozen,” shared that the film boasts over a hundred nods to Disney’s extensive catalog, prompting the filmmakers to use an Excel sheet to keep track of them all. These Easter eggs are a celebratory nod to The Walt Disney Company’s 100th anniversary this year, with nearly every minute of the film referencing another Disney classic.

Asha’s wardrobe pays homage to various characters, such as her cloak resembling Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother’s attire, and Magnifico’s lair featuring the Evil Queen’s poison apple from “Snow White.” The film is filled with subtle references, some even surprising the directors, who discovered new nods while reviewing the growing Excel sheet.

The group of friends accompanying Asha is a clever nod to Snow White’s seven dwarfs, both in terms of their number and individual personalities. Each friend shares a first initial with one of the iconic dwarfs, creating a delightful connection to Disney’s groundbreaking film “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.”

Buck’s favorite Easter egg occurs at the film’s conclusion when Asha’s grandfather sings “When You Wish Upon a Star” from “Pinocchio.” Veerasunthorn, a devoted “Beauty and the Beast” fan, fought to include the character Chip the teacup, ultimately succeeding with a discreet yet significant appearance.

The Easter egg tradition extends into the credits, featuring golden line drawings of classic Disney characters like Tarzan, Mulan, and characters from lesser-known films like “The Great Mouse Detective” and “Oliver and Company.” This homage to Disney’s legacy serves as a fitting conclusion to a film that honors the studio’s rich history.
