Illumination Studios is set to bring joy to audiences in December with its latest film, Migration. Alongside this eagerly awaited release comes a delightful surprise for fans: the short film Mooned, featuring the return of the infamous villain Vector from the beloved Despicable Me series. This special short will be shown before Migration, offering a double treat for moviegoers.
Voiced by Jason Segel, Vector first appeared on screen in 2010 as the nemesis to Steve Carell’s Gru in Despicable Me. After a decade, Mooned brings back Vector, showcasing his escapades and efforts to return to Earth after being hilariously stranded on the moon. This character’s return is not just for nostalgia but to emphasize the enduring charm of the Despicable Me world.
The original Despicable Me was a major success, earning an impressive 80% on Rotten Tomatoes and over $543 million globally. This triumph led to two sequels and a prequel series, Minions, solidifying its status as a cornerstone of contemporary animation.
Beyond Vector’s return, Migration is a film of notable interest, following a family of ducks navigating the urban jungle of New York City during their southward migration. Written by Mike White of The White Lotus fame and directed by Benjamin Renner and Guylo Homsy, the film features a stellar voice cast, including Emmy nominees Kumail Nanjiani and Elizabeth Banks.
As Migration and Mooned premiere on December 22, they join a competitive holiday season lineup, including romantic comedy Anyone But You and superhero extravaganza Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Illumination Studios strategically leverages the popularity of Vector to draw audiences to their new feature, showcasing their commitment to quality entertainment and understanding of audience preferences.
This winter, as moviegoers flock to theaters for holiday entertainment, they will experience a blend of nostalgia and novelty with Mooned and Migration. The return of Vector and the introduction of a new narrative in Migration position Illumination Studios to end the year on a high note, further solidifying its place in the animated film industry.
