Ex-DreamWorks CEO Suggests AI Might Eliminate 90% of Animation Jobs

DreamWorks Animation has joined forces with Netflix for its latest animated project, ‘Orion and the Dark,’ marking the first feature film collaboration between the two entities. The film, set to be a significant addition to the DreamWorks and Netflix partnership, is penned by the acclaimed screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, known for his work on ‘Being John Malkovich’ and ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.’ With a stellar cast, a compelling narrative, and Netflix’s backing, ‘Orion and the Dark’ is positioned as a potential contender for the Best Animated Feature category.

The release date for ‘Orion and the Dark’ is scheduled for February 2, 2024, and it is expected to be available exclusively for streaming on Netflix. However, a theatrical release might also be in the cards to qualify for prestigious awards like The Academy Awards, as seen with Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Pinocchio.’ Despite Netflix’s dominance in the streaming world, certain films have garnered acclaim and nominations after a limited theatrical run.

The first official trailer for ‘Orion and the Dark’ was unveiled on November 9, 2024, during Netflix’s “Geeked Week ’23” event. The trailer provides a glimpse into the film’s titular characters, Orion and Dark, hinting at the conflict between them.

The cast of ‘Orion and the Dark’ includes renowned actors, with Jacob Tremblay voicing Orion, Paul Walter Hauser as Dark, and the legendary filmmaker Werner Herzog contributing to the ensemble. Tremblay, known for his roles in ‘Room’ and ‘Luca,’ brings his talent to the character of Orion. Hauser, recognized for his performances in ‘I, Tonya’ and ‘BlacKkKlansman,’ lends his voice to Dark. Herzog, celebrated for his directing work in ‘Grizzly Man’ and ‘Fitzcarraldo,’ adds his distinctive voice to the project.

The plot revolves around Orion, an ordinary school-going kid struggling with irrational fears, including the dark. Dark, the embodiment of Orion’s deepest fear, takes him on a global adventure to prove that there’s nothing to fear in the night. The story delves into themes of overcoming fears and embracing the unknown.

The creative team behind ‘Orion and the Dark’ is led by director Sean Charmatz, making his feature directorial debut. The film is based on the children’s book of the same name by Emma Yarlett, who is also credited in the writing category. Other key contributors include producer Peter McCown, executive producers Walt Dohrn and Bonnie Arnold, and various talented individuals in the animation and production departments.

With a strong partnership between DreamWorks and Netflix, an intriguing storyline, and a team of accomplished individuals, ‘Orion and the Dark’ aims to captivate audiences and continue the animation studio’s recent resurgence
