Disney Confirms 3 Marvel Movies Still Releasing In 2024 (For Now)

In the year 2024, the collaborative efforts of Marvel Studios and Disney are poised to bring forth a trio of highly anticipated MCU movies. However, the ambitious release schedule finds itself at a crossroads, confronted by the prevailing actors’ strikes that have disrupted the normal flow of film and television productions. The initial salvo was fired when the Writers’ Guild of America (WGA) initiated a strike in May, following failed negotiations with major film studios. This was swiftly followed by a second blow in July, as SAG-AFTRA, representing over 16,000 actors, declared a work stoppage.

In the intervening months, a modicum of equilibrium was restored as an equitable deal was brokered with the WGA. However, the path to resolution with SAG-AFTRA remains uncertain, even though negotiations persist. This precarious situation has undoubtedly cast a shadow of uncertainty over Disney’s meticulously planned release calendar for the foreseeable future.

As of now, the cinematic offerings on the docket from Marvel Studios for 2024 stand at three. While there exists a possibility that the studios may adhere to their original release schedule, it appears increasingly likely that at least one of these endeavors may face a postponement due to the ongoing actors’ strike.

Let’s delve into the details of these three films, along with their tentative release dates as per Disney’s official calendar:

  1. Deadpool 3 – May 3, 2024: The much-anticipated return of Ryan Reynolds as the irreverent Wade Wilson is set to regale audiences once again. Moreover, joining the fray is none other than Hugh Jackman, reprising his beloved role of Wolverine from Fox’s X-Men saga. As it stands, Deadpool 3 is slated to grace theaters on May 3, yet the specter of a potential delay looms large. Should the film studios and SAG-AFTRA fail to find common ground on a new contract expeditiously, Deadpool 3 may bid adieu to its coveted prime summer release slot. It’s worth noting that roughly half of the film has been shot, raising questions about the feasibility of completing the remaining segments within the allotted timeframe, even if an agreement is reached promptly.
  2. Captain America: Brave New World – July 26, 2024: Sam Wilson is set to don his high-tech flight pack and wield his iconic vibranium shield once more in “Captain America: Brave New World.” This installment also features the legendary Harrison Ford in the role of Secretary Ross. Currently slated for a debut on July 26, speculation abounds that the film could potentially leapfrog ahead, taking Deadpool 3’s spot. This hypothetical scenario hinges on the fact that principal photography for “Brave New World” has already been completed, whereas Deadpool 3 is still several weeks away from wrapping up production.
  3. Thunderbolts – December 20, 2024: Marvel may be poised to make its inaugural foray into the coveted holiday season release slot with “Thunderbolts,” earmarked for December 20, 2024. This MCU installment, led by Florence Pugh, sees Yelena Belova joining forces with a motley crew of other heroes and erstwhile villains. Filming for “Thunderbolts” was initially scheduled to commence in June, but Marvel Studios opted to hit the pause button in light of the WGA strike. Consequently, it stands to reason that this film might face a potential delay, potentially spilling over into 2025, unless an accelerated production schedule can be implemented.

With respect to Marvel’s television ventures, the landscape is in a state of flux. “Daredevil: Born Again” finds itself essentially starting anew, while there exists a distinct possibility that “Wonder Man” may have been prematurely shelved in the midst of production. Additionally, it’s conceivable that “Ironheart” may not make its debut on Disney+ until the latter stages of 2025.

Evidently, a series of shifts and recalibrations are underway. The underlying strategy appears to emphasize a more meticulous approach to crafting these series for Disney+, perhaps in response to recent challenges and the new regulatory framework instituted by the WGA in their latest contract. Ultimately, while delays are an inevitability, one can only hope that the enduring patience of fans will be duly rewarded in the grand scheme of things.
