Netflix’s ‘Daredevil’ Showrunner Calls Disney’s Reboot Title a “Scam”

The former showrunner of Netflix’s Daredevil series, Steven DeKnight, has raised concerns over Disney’s approach to the upcoming reboot series, “Daredevil: Born Again.” In a public statement on Twitter, DeKnight pointed out what he described as an “old Disney scam,” where the company slightly alters a series title to effectively reset contract terms back to the first season. This renaming practice, he argued, could potentially have financial implications for the original creators of the series.

Despite the return of beloved lead actors Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio to their respective roles as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, DeKnight expressed apprehension about his compensation for the series due to this renaming. He stated, “From what I understand, I’m not going to see a penny from ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ because they added the ‘Born Again’ and can claim it’s a completely different show. You know, with the exact same two lead actors (who I love!) playing Daredevil and Fisk.”

While DeKnight eagerly anticipates seeing Cox and D’Onofrio reprise their iconic roles, he contends that characterizing the series as a complete reboot, free from financial obligations to the original creatives, raises ethical concerns. He referred to it as “corporate shenanigans.”

In addition to Cox and D’Onofrio’s return, Jon Bernthal is set to reprise his role as Frank Castle/Punisher in “Daredevil: Born Again.” The series is expected to debut with an 18-episode first season, scheduled for release in 2024. DeKnight’s comments have sparked discussions about industry practices and compensation rights for original creators within the entertainment world.
