Pinocchio dominated 2022

Pinocchio is a beloved character known from Carlo Collodi’s original novel to Walt Disney’s iconic 1940 film. In 2022, three new film adaptations emerged, and I made it a mission to watch them all. It’s worth noting that Walt Disney’s version introduced some elements not found in the original text, like the talking cricket and the Blue Fairy.

First up in 2022 was ‘Pinocchio: A True Story,’ a Russian animated film that made an unusual choice by omitting two of the story’s signature elements: Pinocchio’s extending nose and the talking cricket. Despite a viral trailer line, the film disappointed with disjointed voice acting, stiff animation, and lackluster writing. I strongly discourage watching this adaptation; you might find more entertainment in the trailer alone.

The second Pinocchio film was Disney’s latest endeavor to remake their animated classics, helmed by Robert Zemeckis. While all three 2022 iterations were musicals, this version stood out with its music, even though it relied heavily on performances of songs from the original film. The film modernized the ‘Pleasure Island’ scene by replacing smoking and drinking with fireworks, making it a satisfying but not groundbreaking retelling. It falls into the category of enjoyable Disney remakes, but the original still shines brighter.

The final 2022 Pinocchio film came from Guillermo Del Toro, set in Fascist Italy during World War II. This version took a darker, more adult approach, exploring themes like death and moral duty. Geppetto is a grieving father, and the Spirit of Life replaces the Blue Fairy to give life to Pinocchio. The film merges multiple antagonists into Count Volpe and transforms Pleasure Island into a military training camp. The stop-motion animation is breathtaking, and the music, including ‘Ciao Papa,’ impresses. Among the three films, this one stands out as the best, offering a fresh perspective.

If you’re in the mood for a Pinocchio movie, the 1940 classic is a timeless choice. However, among the 2022 offerings, Disney’s version offers a familiar family-friendly adventure, while Del Toro’s on Netflix provides a more contemplative experience for older viewers. ‘A True Story’ is one to skip altogether.
