Disney Parks Enthusiasts Upset Over Artist’s “Insensitive” Comic Regarding Maleficent Fire

The Maleficent fire incident that occurred at Disneyland Park recently evoked strong reactions from Disney Parks enthusiasts. The incident prompted both tributes and discussions among fans, leading to debates about those who found humor in the midst of the flames. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the beloved Fantasmic! animatronic suffered extensive damage in the fire.

Notably, an artist known as Parkineer created a comic shortly after the incident, drawing parallels to a previous fire incident in 2018. During the 2018 Festival of Fantasy Parade at Walt Disney World Resort’s Magic Kingdom, a Maleficent float had caught fire. The artist shared the new comic on Reddit, attempting to capture the similarities between the two events.

While the comic received hundreds of votes in support, it also sparked anger among many Disney Parks fans who found the humor inappropriate and believed it was “too soon” to make light of the recent fire. Several fans criticized the comic for lacking creativity and sensitivity, expressing their disapproval of the artist’s approach.

Amidst the backlash, some individuals seemed to have forgotten about the 2018 Maleficent fire incident, and one commenter pointed out that making a joke about a single accident among countless performances was inconsiderate.

Moving beyond the controversy, Fantasmic! holds a significant place in the hearts of Disney fans. The official description by Disneyland characterizes the show as an extravagant nighttime spectacle where daring heroes and formidable villains engage in epic battles. The show takes the audience through a dream sequence with Mickey Mouse as the Sorcerer’s Apprentice, featuring scenes from beloved Disney classics projected onto water screens.

As the dream takes a darker turn, the Evil Queen from Snow White summons a host of malevolent Disney villains, including a 45-foot-tall, fire-breathing dragon portrayal of Maleficent. The show’s narrative revolves around Mickey’s imaginative efforts to conquer these adversaries and save the day.

While the recent fire incident led to varied reactions and discussions, Fantasmic! remains an iconic part of the Disney Parks experience, captivating audiences with its spectacular blend of animation, special effects, and storytelling.
