Enhanced ‘Cinderella’ in 4K Arriving on Disney+ on August 25

This Friday, on August 25th, Disney+ is set to showcase a brand-new restoration of Walt Disney’s 1950 animated classic, ‘Cinderella.’ This release is a part of the celebrations honoring Walt Disney Animation Studios and the Disney100 festivities. Notably, this marks the film’s debut in 4K streaming quality.

In the past, attempts at restoring ‘Cinderella’ faced challenges, resulting in lost details, altered colors, and diminished artistic nuances. Notably, the 2012 Diamond Edition and the 2019 Signature Edition DVD were met with disappointment due to a decrease in visual quality. However, this latest restoration presents a different story, as it is the result of years of meticulous work by the Walt Disney Studios Restoration and Preservation team, in collaboration with various experts.

Kevin Schaeffer, the director of Restoration for Walt Disney Studios, explained the process, which included utilizing the original nitrate negative from the Library of Congress. This material was scanned in 4K, followed by a cleaning phase to eliminate imperfections. The current restoration tools allowed for a more precise and superior image quality. Contributions from Disney Animation veterans, including Michael Giaimo and Eric Goldberg, were vital to retaining the original detail and artistic choices.

The restoration project benefitted from the insight of experienced Disney artists like Michael Giaimo, known for his work on ‘Frozen’ and ‘Pocahontas,’ and Eric Goldberg, with a longstanding career in Disney animation. Goldberg praised the collaborative effort to ensure the preservation of the film’s visual richness, depth, and accuracy.

The 4K version of ‘Cinderella’ was initially made available to Disney Movie Club members on March 28th of the current year. Its public release on Blu-ray followed on August 1st, accessible through various platforms, including Amazon.

As this meticulous restoration of ‘Cinderella’ is brought to light, discussions arise about viewers’ reactions. The attention to detail and the restoration’s success in recapturing the film’s original essence prompts curiosity about potential future restoration projects. The video included in the article provides a comparison between the 2012 edition and the 2023 remastered edition, offering audiences a glimpse of the improvements.

In summary, the upcoming debut of the 4K-restored ‘Cinderella’ on Disney+ reflects a triumph in restoring the film’s artistic brilliance. With the guidance of seasoned Disney artists and animation experts, the restoration team has managed to breathe new life into this beloved classic, inviting audiences to appreciate the film anew.
