Winnie the Pooh teaches US kids self-protection in shootings

In the state of Texas, there is a growing concern over the approach taken to educate children as young as four years old on how to respond to potential school shootings. This unsettling instruction is being delivered through an unexpected source—a Winnie the Pooh book titled ‘Stay Safe’. Created by a law enforcement consulting firm based in Houston, the book advises children to “run, hide, and fight” in the event of an armed intruder entering their school.

Parents and teachers in the Dallas area were taken aback when they discovered that the ‘Stay Safe’ book had been distributed to pre-school and elementary students. The book features Winnie the Pooh and other beloved characters from the Hundred Acre Wood, using their illustrations to depict the recommended actions during a crisis.

With subtitles such as “If there is danger, let Winnie-the-Pooh and his crew show you what to do: Run, hide, fight,” the book provides specific guidance to young readers. It encourages children to flee to safety if possible, stating, “If it is safe to get away, we should run like rabbit instead of stay.” Furthermore, it advises them to hide until the police arrive, using Pooh as an example: “If danger is near, do not fear and hide like Pooh does until the police appear.”

However, this educational approach has sparked deep unease among parents and educators. A teacher from a Dallas elementary school expressed her strong concerns, describing the book as “terribly disturbing.” She voiced her frustration, saying, “The fact that people think it’s a better idea to put out this book to a child rather than actually take any actions to stop shootings from happening in our schools, that really bothers me.” The teacher further lamented the lack of progress made in implementing tangible measures to ensure school safety, stating, “It makes me feel so angry, so disappointed. It’s a year since Uvalde, and nothing has been done other than this book. That is putting it on the kids.”

As the debate continues, parents, teachers, and experts are questioning the effectiveness and appropriateness of using a children’s book featuring Winnie the Pooh to address such a sensitive and distressing topic. They emphasize the need for comprehensive and proactive measures to prevent school shootings rather than relying solely on educational materials that may evoke fear and anxiety in young minds.
