Disney’s Pixar lays off Galyn Susman, the savior of Toy Story 2

In a surprising turn of events, Galyn Susman, the esteemed producer who is credited with single-handedly saving the iconic film “Toy Story 2,” has recently found herself among the casualties of a mass layoff at Disney’s Pixar. The news broke on Saturday, courtesy of Reuters, revealing that Susman was one of the unfortunate 75 employees who were handed pink slips. However, she was not the only notable figure to face the harsh reality of job loss, as Michael Agulnek, Pixar’s Vice President of Worldwide Publicity, and Angus MacLane, the director of the upcoming film “Lightyear,” also joined the list of those let go.

Reports suggest that these sweeping firings are directly linked to the lackluster performance of “Lightyear,” a high-profile project centered around the “real” Buzz Lightyear character, voiced by the talented Chris Evans. Despite boasting a hefty budget of approximately $200 million, the film failed to meet expectations at the global box office, garnering only $226 million and receiving lukewarm reviews from critics and audiences alike.

While the outcome of “Lightyear” may have contributed to these dismissals, many voices within the industry are expressing their discontent with what they perceive as scapegoating and cold-blooded decision-making. This sentiment is particularly strong in the case of Galyn Susman, whose role in the preservation of “Toy Story 2” remains the stuff of legends. Over the years, Disney executives have recounted the extraordinary tale of how a computer glitch nearly wiped out 90% of the film when it was just a year away from its highly anticipated release date.

As panic engulfed the studio and the daunting task of salvaging the remaining fragments of the movie loomed large, it was Galyn Susman who stepped up as the unsung hero.
