Disney and Apple join forces to create immersive VR and AR storytelling experiences

Disney CEO Bob Iger and Apple CEO Tim Cook made a joint appearance at Apple WWDC23 to announce a collaboration between Disney and Apple for future VR and AR ventures. The partnership will utilize Apple’s newly unveiled Vision Pro headset and aims to bring Disney+, ESPN+, and Disney Parks experiences into people’s homes. While specific applications were not yet revealed, a preview showcased the potential of merging Disney’s extensive portfolio, including Marvel, ESPN, Walt Disney Animation Studios, and Star Wars, with immersive technology.

The collaboration envisions a world where Disney+ shows like “The Mandalorian” can extend beyond the screen, allowing viewers to explore the Star Wars galaxy with interactive elements such as planet locations, character information, and vehicle details. Additionally, ESPN+ will provide a unique sports viewing experience, with Apple Vision Pro bringing virtual screens showcasing different sports directly into viewers’ living rooms. Virtual full-sized athletes will enhance in-room celebrations, creating a personalized and immersive atmosphere.

The capabilities of the Vision Pro headset extend to virtual reality, enabling users to sit inside a Star Wars speeder on Tatooine while enjoying the latest episode of “The Mandalorian.” With spatial audio and dual 4K eye screens, the headset promises an unparalleled Star Wars experience. The collaboration also envisions bringing the world of Mickey Mouse and friends to life in users’ surroundings, blurring the line between imagination and reality.

While specific details about virtual visits to Disney Parks were not disclosed, the preview hinted at the possibility of experiencing iconic Disney attractions, such as the Main Street Electrical Parade, in the comfort of one’s kitchen. The combination of Apple’s AR and VR technology with Disney’s storytelling expertise opens up a world of exciting possibilities for immersive digital experiences.

Apple Vision Pro, slated to be available at a starting price of $3499, holds great potential for transforming how audiences engage with Disney’s content and theme park experiences in the future.
