The Korean Pokemon Trainers Cup took an unexpected turn when an entire team of four players from Team Korea was disqualified from the tournament for attempting to use the move Metronome as a form of protest. As the 2023 Pokemon World Championship loomed closer, competitive Pokemon players worldwide were eagerly vying for top positions in their respective countries to secure a spot in the prestigious event.
However, participating in these tournaments comes with strict rules and regulations set by The Pokemon Company and event organizers, and these guidelines can sometimes vary from country to country. Unfortunately, this discrepancy led to the disqualification of the entire Korean Pokemon VGC team during the Korean Pokemon Trainers Cup.
Nash, a VGC player and the manager of Team Korea, took to Twitter to reveal that he and his three teammates, Blue, Sangyoon, and Mija, received an email on June 3, 2023, informing them of their disqualification from the Trainers Cup Finals. The disqualification occurred just as the team was preparing for the final round, which was scheduled to be livestreamed and determine the standings from 1st to 4th place. However, since they were already guaranteed a spot on Day 2 of the upcoming Pokemon World Championship, the team felt that not much was at stake.
In a unique and unexpected turn of events, the team decided to engage in a Metronome battle during the Finals. Metronome is a move in the Pokemon series that randomly selects a move from the vast array of available moves and uses it against the opponent. While Metronome battles can be chaotic and fun, they significantly diminish the strategic element of the battle due to the entirely random nature of the moves used.
The decision to participate in a Metronome battle was not merely for amusement but rather a form of protest. Nash explained that Korea, like other Asian regions, had faced a challenging year, and organizing and participating in in-person events had become extremely difficult due to various world events. Korean players had experienced frustrations in recent tournaments, including issues with best-of-one formats and inadequate communication from both organizers and The Pokemon Company (TPC). These difficulties left many Korean players feeling disheartened and dissatisfied.
Regrettably, the tournament organizers did not appreciate the protest staged by Team Korea. Consequently, all four players were disqualified via email on June 3, 2023, just before the Finals. The disqualification was attributed to the fact that all locked-in Pokemon on Team Korea’s lineup had learned the specific move, Metronome.
As a result of this disqualification, the Korean Pokemon Trainers Cup was effectively canceled, with no winners officially determined. Furthermore, Team Korea lost their invitations to participate in Day 2 of the highly anticipated 2023 Pokemon World Championship, adding further disappointment to an already eventful turn of events.
