Haikyuu!! Voice Actor Bryson Baugus Unexpected Real-Life Friendships

Bryson Baugus, the talented voice actor behind Shoyo Hinata in the English dub of the popular manga and anime series “Haikyuu!!,” brings the irrepressible and determined character to life. Hinata, a spirited teenager attending Karasuno High School, aspires to be like his idol, the “Small Giant,” a former Karasuno student and volleyball player. With his unwavering ambition, Hinata joins the school’s volleyball club, but not without first reconciling with his arch-rival, Tobio Kageyama. While Ayumu Murase provides Hinata’s voice in the original Japanese audio, the recent Sentai Filmworks English dub features the talented Bryson Baugus as the voice of Hinata (via My Anime List).

In an interview with The Geekiary, Baugus shared insights into his role and approach to voicing Hinata. He expressed that his main objective on the series is to “match the energy and the intent of what I see happening in the animation.” Baugus takes pride in his voice work on “Haikyuu!!,” although he admitted feeling some nervousness about how fans would perceive his portrayal.

Interestingly, when asked which fictional character from the show he would like to hang out with, Baugus didn’t mention Hinata. Instead, he revealed a different choice. While his co-stars Kyle C. Jones and Scott Gibbs mentioned the assertive and bold Tanaka as the character they would most want to spend time with, Baugus took a unique direction. Baugus shared that although Tanaka is his favorite character from “Haikyuu!!,” the character he would choose to hang out with is Kenma Kozume from Nekoma.

The reasoning behind Baugus’s choice becomes evident as he explains his connection to Kenma. Like the contemplative and reserved student from Nekoma High, Baugus also shares a fondness for video games. But beyond that, Baugus describes Kenma as “low-key and chill,” qualities that resonate with him. He further elaborates that most of his real-life friends possess a similar low-key nature, preferring relaxed conversations and a more laid-back atmosphere.

Kenma’s reserved demeanor may give the impression of disinterest, but he genuinely cares about his friends and exerts tremendous effort in volleyball for their sake. While Tanaka’s passionate and energetic personality may be appealing to many, Baugus’s preference for Kenma demonstrates an appreciation for the calm and steadfast loyalty that the character embodies, even in high-stakes situations.

In summary, Bryson Baugus, the English voice actor for Shoyo Hinata in “Haikyuu!!,” would choose to hang out with Kenma Kozume from Nekoma High due to their shared low-key nature, love for video games, and Kenma’s unwavering loyalty as a friend. Baugus’s choice highlights his appreciation for characters with depth and demonstrates the range of connections that fans can form with different personalities within the series.
