Black Clover’s Author Pays Tribute to Dragon Ball’s 40th Anniversary with a Cover

“To celebrate Dragon Ball’s 40th anniversary, Yuki Tabata, the mangaka behind Black Clover, has created a tribute cover in their own artistic style.

As part of the Dragon Ball Super Gallery project, which involves popular mangaka redrawing iconic volume covers from the Dragon Ball series, Yuki Tabata, the creator of Black Clover, has joined in by recreating the cover of Dragon Ball Volume 40 featuring Gotenks. Tabata’s version showcases the fused form of Goten and Trunks, exuding confidence with a thumbs-up gesture. This tribute by Tabata adds to the collection of remarkable redrawn covers shared on Twitter by @WSJ_manga.

Dragon Ball’s influence has been profound, inspiring numerous artists in the manga and anime industry. Yuki Tabata, known for Black Clover, pays homage to this legendary work in their ongoing manga series. Black Clover follows Asta, a young man without magical powers in a world where such abilities are commonplace. The series features captivating characters, intense battles, and surprising plot twists, with evident influences from Dragon Ball and other notable manga like Naruto by Masashi Kishimoto.

The Dragon Ball Super Gallery project has seen participation from various acclaimed mangaka. Masashi Kishimoto, the creator of Naruto, started the tribute series with their reinterpretation of Dragon Ball Volume 11 cover. Notable contributors also include Tite Kubo (Bleach), Tatsuki Fujimoto (Chainsaw Man), Koyoharu Gotouge (Demon Slayer), Hirohiko Araki (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure), and many others. Each month, a new redesigned cover will be released until Dragon Ball’s 40th anniversary in November 2024.

Dragon Ball’s journey since its debut in 1984 has had its share of highs and lows. Despite setbacks like the ill-received live-action film Dragon Ball: Evolution, the franchise’s popularity was reignited with the release of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods and Dragon Ball Super. The series’ resurgence has inspired a new generation of artists and animators, just as Dragon Ball inspired previous mangaka. Both Black Clover and Dragon Ball can be enjoyed by readers on Viz.”
