What sets All Might apart from Superman in My Hero Academia

While My Hero Academia draws inspiration from classic comic book heroes like Superman, there are key differences that set All Might apart from the iconic DC character. Despite their similarities, All Might cannot be considered the anime version of Superman due to one specific reason.

My Hero Academia is a shonen superhero anime that pays homage to both DC and Marvel superheroes, but it also introduces its own unique take on the genre. All Might, often hailed as the Symbol of Peace, is often compared to Superman for his incredible strength and unwavering dedication to protecting society. However, there is one critical ability that sets Superman apart from All Might: flight.

Flight is one of Superman’s signature powers, allowing him to soar through the skies with ease. In contrast, All Might has never demonstrated the ability to fly. While this may seem like a mere difference in combat mechanics within the My Hero Academia universe, it actually highlights the fact that All Might was never meant to be a perfect replica of Superman.

All Might was initially positioned as Japan’s own version of Superman, a beacon of hope and a great defender of the people. However, the absence of flight in his repertoire serves as a reminder that he is an imperfect imitator of the legendary DC superhero. Throughout the series, All Might is gradually humbled, revealing weaknesses and deficiencies that challenge his seemingly invincible image. This deconstruction of the infallible hero archetype distinguishes All Might from the near-invincible Superman portrayed in Western comics.

While All Might possesses immense strength and the ability to run at incredible speeds, even these attributes make him feel somewhat inferior to Superman. Unlike his DC counterpart, who can effortlessly fly anywhere, even into space, All Might’s running and jumping abilities reflect the early versions of Superman, who was known for his leaping rather than flying. All Might’s powers and abilities are notably limited in My Hero Academia, and raw strength alone proves insufficient in his ultimate battle against his nemesis, All For One. It is his successor, Izuku Midoriya (also known as Deku), who must tap into the full potential of One For All, the quirk passed down to him, and its integrated quirks to achieve victory. Notably, Nana Shimura’s Float Quirk provides a semblance of flight similar to Superman’s iconic ability.

Despite lacking some of Superman’s extraordinary powers such as flight, heat vision, or freeze breath, All Might remained My Hero Academia’s Symbol of Peace. He embodied the true heart of a hero, inspiring others with his charisma, unwavering courage, and idealism. However, he couldn’t single-handedly become society’s ultimate savior against the League of Villains and bring about lasting peace due to his limited powers. Instead, it falls upon Deku to become the true Superman of My Hero Academia. Deku possesses both the powers and the idealistic heart necessary to fulfill the role that society needs.

In the My Hero Academia: Vigilantes spinoff manga, another character named Captain Celebrity is introduced, bearing even stronger similarities to Superman. With immense popularity, an American background, and the ability to fly, Captain Celebrity seems closer to the complete package of a Superman-like hero. However, his actions reveal a crucial flaw—his heroics are driven by a desire for fame rather than genuine idealism. He would even refuse to help people if it didn’t bring him favorable media coverage, exposing the rot within his heart.

This serves as further evidence that My Hero Academia’s world requires more than just the powers or the external image of Superman. All Might’s incompleteness and Captain Celebrity’s lack of true heroism highlight the need for a hero who embodies both power and the right intentions. It is up to Deku, with his inherited powers and unwavering ideals, to become the true shonen boy of steel and bring about lasting peace for all.
